Position Summary
The work of the Data Governance and Integration Group (DGIG) includes:
• building and implementing the Institute's data integration strategies including major data assets,
such as the National Health Data Hub
• protecting the confidentiality and privacy of Institute data holdings through data governance
leadership and the AIHW Ethics Committee
• managing key relationships across government in support of the public sector data agenda.
The Ethics and Privacy Unit provides support to the activities of the AIHW by:
• ensuring the Institute's compliance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and Privacy (Australian Government

• coordinating key Institute data governance activities and policies, including the Data Governance
Framework, Data Catalogue and our accreditation with the Office of the National Data
Commissioner, and
• providing advice and secretariat support to the AIHW Ethics Committee.
The Data Governance and Integration Group is looking for an enthusiastic person with strong organisational,
communication and policy development skills to support the Institute's privacy, confidentiality, and data
governance functions.
The EL1 Senior Governance and Policy Officer provides leadership and support across the Institute in
developing and supporting exemplary data governance practices.
Under general direction you will:
• Draft and update data governance, policies, guidelines, and templates.
• Provide advice about data governance matters to data custodians and other staff.
• Prepare annual updates to the AIHW Data Governance Framework and the Guidelines for the custody of
AIHW data.
• Provide secretariat support to the Data Governance Committee, including development of its annual
forward agenda of activities; scheduling quarterly meetings; preparation of agendas, papers, and
quarterly and annual reports to the senior executive.
• Facilitate and present at four Data Custodian Forums each year.
• Update data governance intranet pages and online training materials and maintain the AIHW Data
• Liaise with external agencies, AIHW staff and other government agencies on data governance
matters.
• Work collaboratively with the Unit Head and other EL1 officers within the Unit to provide leadership,
direction, performance management of staff and the effective management of allocated resources.

Selection Criteria
Our ideal candidate will have most or all of the following skills and knowledge:
1. Demonstrated understanding of the privacy, confidentiality and data governance matters affecting
AIHW.
2. Demonstrated ability to achieve results by drawing on the expertise of others such as internal and
external stakeholders, Government, and industry partners to deliver on intended results.
3. Ability to cultivate productive working relationships.

4. Ability to communicate with influence both verbally and in writing with a range of internal and
external stakeholders. This includes your ability to negotiate mutually beneficial outcomes.
5. Ability to shape strategic thinking by understanding the link between the work of the Unit, the
Institute and the whole of government agenda.
6. Exemplifies drive and integrity.
