Salary Range: $122,949 - $135,013 + Attractive Superannuation Contact Officer: Simon Hill 02 6289 6389 The Legislative Reform Branch, within the Policy Division is seeking an experienced policy manager to provide guidance and technical expertise to the development of policy materials in support of the generational Legislative reform occurring within the Veterans' Affairs portfolio.
This role will oversee the development of technical policy and procedural documentation that provides the framework for the decision makers across the Department. The position will involve the preparation of critical work to support implementation of new legislation with effect from 1 July 2026. This work is a key priority of Government in response to recommendations from the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide.
The successful applicant will be a critical thinker with experience working in a high tempo policy space to review and draft policies, procedures and guidance material with a high degree of accuracy, judgement and attention to detail. They will be able to analyse and interpret information from varying sources and work collaboratively to develop innovative solutions to complex legislative problems. Strong written and oral communication skills will be essential for the role.
Applicants will require a strong knowledge of the Department's compensation legislation and be able to manage competing priorities. It may also be necessary to provide direction to staff.
Duties
Lead the development of technical repatriation policy documents Interpret legislation and provide advice to senior decision-making bodies in the portfolio Develop focussed and clear documentation to provide guidance to Commission delegates. Review and update documentation which forms the Department's 'knowledge management framework' (CLIK, website, SharePoint, policy impact statements, local procedures, etc) Prepare submissions and briefing material for the Minister, DVA Executive Group and the Department's internal Governance Board(s) Assist with the preparation of material to support future decisions of Cabinet as needed Eligibility
Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the Australian Public Service (APS). Where a non-ongoing position is offered, the role will be filled for an initial specified term of up to 23 months. A merit pool of suitable applicants may be created which may be used to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies should they become available over the next 18 months.
