The Role
An opportunity exists for an experienced psychologist to oversee mental health service delivery to Australian Defence Force (ADF) members in North Queensland.
Working within a multidisciplinary healthcare team, the EL 1 Psychology Manager provides technical guidance and oversight of contracted, APS and ADF mental health professionals responsible for the day to day delivery of mental health services.
These services include mental health triage and screening, crisis intervention, providing clinical and risk assessments, complex case management, and therapeutic interventions.
As the EL 1 Psychology Manager you will exercise a considerable degree of independence.
You will be expected to act as the subject matter expert in support of mental health service delivery, while ensuring compliance with legislative frameworks, clinical best practice and Defence health policies.
You will be expected to build team capability through peer consultation, mentoring, and training facilitation.
A key aspect of this role is liaison with Commanding Officers, supervisors, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure the welfare of ADF members.
This position reports to the Commanding Officer of Joint Health Unit North Queensland, with technical guidance provided via the Senior ADF Mental Health Officer at Headquarters Joint Health Command.
The position is part of a broader Psychology Case Management team which provides a network of support in the specialised area of mental health services.

The EL 1 Psychologist Manager position is part of Joint Health Unit - North Queensland and is based at Lavarack Barracks, Townsville, QLD.
Each Joint Health Unit facility provides a range of services which can include medical, nursing, dental, physiotherapy, mental health, rehabilitation, and in-patient care.
The JHC workforce is an integrated, multi-disciplinary team of Defence members, civilians, contractors and professional health providers.
We work together to manage around one million patient health service interactions with Defence members each year.
Our Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will: Be an experienced psychologist committed to improving the mental health and well-being of ADF personnel.
Demonstrate strong technical skills and knowledge in complex case management, and possess a sound understanding of legislative frameworks and Defence's mission and policy requirements.
Exercise both initiative and judgment in the interpretation of policy and in the application of practices and procedures.
Excellent communication and negotiation skills and have the ability to develop productive relationships across various stakeholders both internal and external to Defence.
Have the ability to anticipate, identify, and respond to the needs and expectations of these stakeholders is important.
Be committed to ongoing self-improvement and professional development, and have experience in leading, mentoring and coaching teams to deliver optimal outcomes.
Be prepared to travel periodically to the Defence facilities within their area of responsibility.
