Our team At Geoscience Australia, we are passionate about improving the lives of Australians by exploring our country's rich and deep geological history to address current and future geoscience challenges.
Our understanding of this ancient continent builds on the knowledge of Country held by our nation's original miners, mappers and navigators.
Today, we are recruiting to bring onboard the next generation of innovators, scientists and advisors to deliver on national priorities.
The Minerals, Energy and Groundwater (MEG) Division acquires, analyses and delivers precompetitive data, information, tools and new thinking to support the sustainable development of Australia's minerals, energy and groundwater resources.
We provide authoritative and independent technical advice to the Australian Government and promote the responsible development of Australia's natural resources.
Within MEG we seek to: Enable our technological and renewable energy future, with precompetitive geoscience programs to support a pipeline of critical minerals discoveries.
Lead Australia's low-emissions future by proving up large-scale carbon abatement strategies including green hydrogen, green metals and carbon capture and storage.
Secure a sustainable future for Australia's groundwater resources through basin assessments and regional groundwater studies using a consistent national framework.
The work of the Onshore Seismic and Magnetotellurics (OSMT) Section will be integral to the Resourcing Australia's Prospectivity initiative, a recently announced, multi-decadal investment in pre-competitive geoscience by the Commonwealth Government.
Resourcing Australia's Prosperity will, over 35 years, at a national scale and through deep dives, progressively map Australia's highly prospective regions, critical minerals, groundwater and resources needed for the transition to net zero.
We want you to join our diverse and high-performing teams and grow your career with Geoscience Australia.
The role The OSMT section focuses on acquiring and analysing data across various regions of Australia to enhance our understanding of the structure and composition of the Earth's crust and lithosphere.
Our work includes projects such as Aus Array and Aus LAMP, which generate 3 D models of the Australia lithosphere.
In addition, the team utilises thermo-chemical modelling, an advanced geophysical tool that integrates passive seismic, gravity, topography and heatflow data to create detailed models of the lithosphere's physical properties, such as temperature, density, and composition.
This comprehensive approach provides deep insights into the structure of the crust and mantle, supporting exploration activities and identifying areas with significant resource potential.
In the Geophysicist (Observational Geodynamicist) role you will: Use your specialist technical skills to scope, lead and drive thermo-chemical modelling projects at regional and national scales.
Provide high level technical and professional advice on various geophysical methods including passive seismic and magnetotelluric to inform national scale data acquisition programs.
Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to interpret model implications for our understanding of mineral systems.
Coordinate, engage and collaborate with key industry, government and academic stakeholders to identify opportunities, achieve mutually beneficial outcomes and facilitate cooperation.
Contribute to and support a strategic direction that influences mineral industry investment through the provision of targeted multidisciplinary precompetitive data packages.
Effectively communicate results through the preparation of high-quality technical reports presentations and peer reviewed journal articles.
Effectively represent the agency at conferences and other stakeholder engagements in a professional and specialist context.
Maintain professional knowledge and continue to develop knowledge and expertise in various geophysical methods.
Support the Director, Onshore Seismic and Magnetotellurics, and contribute as a proactive member of the Section.
To be successful in the role you will: Support the strategic direction of Geoscience Australia and the Australian Government's priorities.
Provide scientific leadership, mentoring and technical expertise to support building staff capability.
Communicate with others regarding the purpose of own work and the relationship between operational activities and organisational goals.
Build and sustain long-term relationships; liaise with a range of stakeholders including other teams, peers and colleagues across the organisation, across government, industry and academia.
Maintain focus on quality to achieve key outcomes; adhere to documented procedures and see tasks through to completion.
Be a team player who collaborates effectively, actively shares knowledge, is open to developing new skills, and takes personal responsibility for their work.
Present messages in a clear, concise and articulate manner and negotiate persuasively to facilitate agreement and acceptance of mutually beneficial solutions.
Demonstrate a commitment to building a positive and inclusive workplace culture.
Adhere to the Australian Public Service Values and Code of Conduct and consistently behave in an honest, ethical and professional way.
Required skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications Proven experience with geophysical inverse methods (e.g.
Bayesian inversion).
Demonstrated experience working with complex earth models preferably with a focus on mantle petrology and geodynamics.
Ability to distil complex information into clear, cohesive narratives that address key scientific questions, effectively communicating the significance and impact of the analysis.
Demonstrated ability to lead and work with multidisciplinary teams.
Highly developed skills in software development for geophysical applications and familiarity with scientific programming languages (e.g.
Fortran, python, matlab, C) are highly desirable.
Experience in integrating diverse geological and geophysical datasets to develop and refine comprehensive geological models.
A degree in Earth Sciences, applied mathematics or related fields is essential.
