We are seeking a Masters or PhD qualified Historian to lead a team of Historians within the Community Engagement Team.
The History Team creates commemorative and historical resources to share with the broader community, to raise awareness of the diverse experiences of Australian military service.
The Team also supports the entire department, departmental executive, and the Minister in this work, and provides departmental services including speech writing, fact checking, and professional guidance on representing military history matters.
The History Team runs projects and programs, such as developing commemorative posters and calendars, managing the acquisition of images, veterans' oral history project, VC and VCfA travel program, and a program researching, drafting and publishing books on Australia's wartime history.
Under limited direction of the Director, the Assistant Director, Senior Historian is responsible for leading a team to provide specialist support and advice across the department.
Through this role you will be responsible for the strategic direction of the team within the wider Commemorations Branch to ensure the work aligns with the commemorative strategy, commemorative calendar and the goals of DVA.
You will be required to liaise with DVA staff, ex-service organisations, veterans and their families.
Our ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate strong leadership skills, excellent oral and written communication, high level research skills and be able to manage a variety of competing demands.
Experience in an APS setting, or public historian role, is highly desirable.

Where a non-ongoing position is offered, the role will be filled for an initial specified term of up to 23 months.
A merit pool of suitable applicants may be created which may be used to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies should they become available over the next 18 months.
Successful applicants engaged into the APS will be subject to a probation period.
