A little bit about us:  The Business Division:  The Road and Vehicle Safety Division sets the policy direction for road safety through the National Road Safety Strategy 2021-30. We drive and support Road Vehicle Safety legislation, provide national leadership and coordination to improve road safety outcomes. We also set and enforce vehicle standards (including safety recalls) as well as overseeing key road and community infrastructure programs in partnership with the states and territories.
The Branches and Sections:  Vehicle Safety Operations Branch is Australia's national vehicle standards regulator. We work to enhance vehicle safety, emissions control and anti-theft protection to ensure the Australian vehicle fleet is safe and efficient. The Technical Assessment & Approvals section undertake a range of activities in relation to the assessment of a variety of application types under the RVSA.
The Targeted Infrastructure Programs Branch is responsible for administering and implementing national infrastructure sub-programs, delivered under the National Partnership Agreement on Land Transport Infrastructure Projects or through individual funding agreements. These programs benefit all Australians by improving road safety, increasing productivity, and enriching communities. We work in partnership with state, territory and local governments to form strong connections across the country and achieve the seamless delivery of a vast program of work.
The opportunities we have available The department is seeking to fill two Assistant Director positions for two different sections:
Technical Assessment and Approvals Safer Roads Programs Technical Assessment and Approvals We have an opportunity for an Assistant Director to lead a team of Technical Assessment Officers. This position will provide you with an opportunity to collaborate and engage with a range of stakeholders whilst applying RVS legislation requirements on a day-to-day basis.
As an Assistant Director will be expected to undertake a range of activities related to the assessment of a variety of application types under the RVS legislation. You will investigate issues, gather evidence, think critically about different stakeholder perspectives, and analyse and interpret data from a variety of sources to make decisions and recommendations.
You will work closely with subject matter experts to ensure the required application processes are followed and decisions are communicated to stakeholders in a timely and appropriate manner. On an ongoing basis, you will also undertake policy development and regulatory improvement activities, as well as participate in technical panels when necessary.
Provide direction and leadership to others regarding the purpose and importance of their work and illustrate the relationship between operational tasks and organisational goals. Set work tasks that align with the strategic objectives and communicate expected outcomes. Make decisions under the RVS legislation by leveraging technical expertise and knowledge of legislative framework requirements. Development of vehicle safety policy, procedures and standards. Liaison with stakeholders relating to applications, policy and standards, and the development of responses to written requests for information. Providing technical input and advice to other assessors and sections within the branch. Contributing to risk-based assurance or review activities, such as audits. Build and sustain relationships with a network of key people internally and externally. Develop written reports, publications, briefings, correspondence, and technical papers on complex issues. Confidently present messages in a clear, concise and articulate manner. Safer Roads Programs As an Assistant Director in the Targeted Infrastructure Programs Branch you will demonstrate the ability to deliver results, lead and manage teams, and build productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Depending on the role, you may be undertaking a number of the following tasks relating to your program management responsibilities.
Managing programs including:  Assessing new project proposals, m anaging and advising on existing projects and m anaging grants processes and seeking delegate approvals. Supervision, guidance and mentoring of a small team to achieve business unit deliverables. Liaising with stakeholders, including Ministers, State, Territory and Local Governments, the public and other interested organisations, both verbally and in writing. Managing secretariat for governance committees. Managing core administrative functions, such as the preparation of ministerial correspondence, briefs, implementation advice and media releases. Providing strategic, process and policy advice to the senior executive and Ministers on future changes and enhancements to the programs. Reporting on the performance of projects and programs. Who are we looking for?  Technical Assessment and Approvals To be successful in this role, you will need to demonstrate your ability to:
Apply technical qualifications or experience and critical thinking to analyse information and reach sound conclusions. Successfully manage a team of technical assessors. Make correct decisions based on recommendations and knowledge of application type. Identify your experience in the automotive, or similar engineering-based industries. Use evidence to develop policies and strategies. Work with regulation or administrative law. Provide excellent written and oral communication skills. Engage with stakeholders. Identify highly-developed interpersonal skills, and your ability to work both in and across teams fostering a culture of teamwork, integrity and respect. Qualifications and experience: Qualifications in engineering, science or technology related to vehicle safety and experience in the automotive sector will be highly desirable. Experience within commonwealth or state and territory agencies would be beneficial but is not necessary.
Safer Roads Programs We are seeking candidates who are outcomes driven, accountable and have experience in managing a range of competing priorities.

Effective stakeholder engagement skills to collaborate across teams and divisions and build consensus amongst stakeholders. Experience managing strategic processes, including excellent coordination skills and strong attention to detail. The ability to act with integrity, judgment and professionalism.
