Job description: The Blast Controller / Coordinator is responsible for the safe and efficient management of drilling and blasting activities within the mining operation, predominately blast controlling duties for all blasting on site.
This role is integral to optimizing production, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental standards, and achieving budgeted targets.
Key Responsibilities Blast Controlling – Safely and efficiently manage the exclusion zones for all blasts, fume management, road closures, liaison with all areas / departments of the mine site and neighbouring properties.
Operations Planning - Plan and coordinate drill and blasting activity in line with production targets, schedules, and safety plans whilst working closely with the mine planning team.
Supervise Drill and Blast Contract crews.
Risk management - In accordance with systems and processes, including risk assessments, misfire management, pre-starts, incident reporting, hazard reporting, task observations, etc.
Communication - Liaise with stakeholders to align the drill and blast operations and mine planning.
Performance - Analyse drilling and blasting performance, assist with improvements in performance, safety, and cost control.
Report and Presentation - Produce reports of drilling and blasting activities and related metrics for presentation.
Team Building – Help to develop teamwork and continuous improvement.
Continuous Improvement - Resolve issues and ensure production activities perform to the highest level possible.
Qualifications & Experience 5+ years of experience in a similar role within the mining industry, with a strong understanding of open-cut coal mining.
Shot-firing experience essential; minimum 5 years as an appointed Shotfirer.
Preferred Blast Controller experience, but not essential.
Preferred but not essential: strong understanding of drilling techniques, machinery, and safety standards.
