About the Role The Doctor in Training (DIT) Medical Advisor will be based within Avant's Medical Indemnity Division but will work across several Avant divisions to develop an understanding of medico-legal risk and provide medical input into complaints, claims, research, and member education material. This role will also contribute to increasing Avant's understanding of the professional needs of DITs. You will be rostered regular days and hours to complete the duties of the role taking account of ongoing clinical duties and requirements of Avant.
The principle purposes of the position are to: Provide medical advice and clinical input to the Claims Department and Medico Legal Advisory team.Increase awareness and understanding of medico-legal, and safety and quality issues amongst DITs.Provide ongoing research and education to members, staff, and external stakeholders via Avant's business units.Help develop resources and risk management strategies to improve safety and reduce risk to patients and their doctors.Participate in special projects and initiatives, as required.Key accountabilities: Provision of timely medical advice and guidance to Claims Managers and legal service providers on medical issues.Review member's reports, statements, and responses and provide feedback.Identify medical issues including medical causation issues.Review and provide commentary on expert reports and ongoing review of medical developments during a claim to identify emerging medical issues.Identify appropriate medical experts and best practice advice related to claims against medical practitioners.Attend conferences with members, mediations, and pre-hearings where appropriate.Refer Avant Members to the Support Program or Doctors' Health Advisory Service where appropriate.Conduct all activities in accordance with the relevant Avant protocols and guidelines.Attend Major Case Strategy Group (MCSG) meetings.Provide medical support to the medico-legal advice service to Avant members.Provide advice to members and staff about medico-legal matters.Provide medical support to the medicolegal advisors as appropriate.Offer peer support and referral to the Support Program or Doctors' Health Advisory Service where appropriate.Provide support to Avant in developing research, education, and advocacy for members, staff, and internal and external bodies in medico-legal and clinical risk.Participate in educational activities, including writing articles for internal and external publication to raise awareness of medico-legal, clinical risk.Participate in risk management activities.Contribute to the Avant research agenda.Represent Avant and members at medical forums as appropriate.Support Retention & Growth (R&G) Unit's initiatives and educational activities.Provide advice across Avant on professional issues that impact doctors in training.Provide support to developing the composition and agenda and chair meetings of Avant's Early Career Doctor Advisory Committee (ECDAC).Chair ECDAC and share the member doctor in training committee (DITAC).Raise awareness of issues for Doctors in Training and Early Career Doctors within Avant (e.g., National Advisory Stakeholder Committee).Contribute to the Advocacy team in developing position papers and influencing peers on key medico-legal changes that will impact the profession.To be successful you will have: Medical Degree (MBBS).Currently participating in a recognized specialty training position.Medical industry experience.Attention to detail.Pragmatic and proactive.Time management.Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills.Excellent verbal and written skills and advocacy skills.Proactive approach to developing relationships and understanding customer requirements.At Avant, our people are the centre of everything we do for our members.
