The Role: We are looking for a display carpenter to assist within the woodwork production team as directed by the Team Leader of Woodwork.
Daily work will include basic carpentry, cabinet making, set building, set detailing, general assembly and housekeeping.
The position is best suited to a tradesperson who has years of experience in either a cabinetry, shop fitting or an exhibition / set construction / scenic workshop.
This is a full-time position working five days per week, Monday to Friday. In this role, you will get the exciting opportunity to be involved with the construction of the elaborate Myer Melbourne Christmas windows sets, scenery and props over a four to five month period.
The bulk of the fabrication is for short term display use (two to six weeks).
You will be required to perform core studio tasks, as well as onsite installation as required. Please note that you must be able to work outside normal retail trading hours (approximately five nights every six weeks) to service current retail clients by undertaking onsite installations. The candidate must be able to travel interstate for periods of up to approximately seven days for installations on a job specific basis. Please also note that availability is required on various seasonal dates including Mother's Day, Father's Day and Christmas Eve for striking and resetting of seasonal displays.
This position will also require regular onsite installations (predominately evenings) outside normal retail trading hours. Qualifications and Skills: The ideal applicant must have: · AQF Certificate III, including at least two years of on-the-job training, or · AQF Certificate IV; or · At least three years of relevant experience in lieu of the formal qualifications listed above; and · At least two years of relevant experience, preferably in either a cabinetry, shop fitting or exhibition / set construction / scenic workshop; and · Experience in fast paced work environments and the ability to deal with stressful situations as we have ever pending non-negotiable deadlines The ideal applicant must also maintain a valid driver's license during employment.
Key responsibilities and duties: · Responsible for the fabrication of assorted structures from simple display plinths, window displays, faux architecture and textures, set and scenery items to freestanding props · Core studio tasks: o Reading issued shop drawings o Preparation of cutting lists o Measuring and marking out.
o Tracing templates and profile cutting o Table saw / band saw / drop saw / thicknesser / drill press operation o Assembly of sheet and linear materials o Preparation of multiple production jigs o Assembly of components o Fabrication & skinning of primary structure o Preparation of assembled objects for painting – filling & sanding o General house keeping o Weekly maintenance of the dust extractor o Organization of hardware o Maintain a safe workplace o General maintenance of tools & equipment o Onsite installations and alterations · Onsite installations: o Onsite Window Installation at department stores, chain and international brands, windows and other onsite works.
o Onsite installations for the event, theatre, TV and visitor attraction industries.
o Reading plans and checking display collateral o Striking and bumpout of the "out-going" window set o Cleaning and preparing the window cavity o Installation of either Stage One fabricated or client supplied Cookie Cutter window set o Onsite alterations and "make goods" as required Application Deadline: 25/11/2024
