Who we are
The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program, the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals.
These goals are to:
maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia's influence within itprotect the Antarctic environmentunderstand the role of Antarctica in the global climate systemundertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance.The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands.
The Policy and Strategy Branch has responsibility for Antarctic policy and regulation, including administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands and leading on international engagement for the AAD. The branch is responsible for implementation of the Australian Antarctic Strategy and 20 Year Action Plan, which sets out Australia's national Antarctic interests and our vision for Australia's future engagement in Antarctica.
The International Section leads policy development and international engagement in relation to Australia's presence in Antarctica, including participation in meetings of the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting, the Committee for Environmental Protection and the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources.
The key duties of the position include:leading a team that develops and provides policy advice on Antarctica, including ensuring Australia's Antarctic interests are considered in policy development for broader interconnecting issues (e.g. science, maritime and ocean, space, infrastructure and climate change)leading Australia's engagement in international forabuilding visibility and understanding of Antarctic issues in Australia's national foreign policy, security and science agendas to advance Australia's Antarctic interestsworking collaboratively across the AAD, within the department and with whole of government partners to deliver the government's strategic objectivesbuilding a high-performing team, including fostering a culture of inclusion and diversity; supporting other branch, divisional and departmental priorities.What we are looking forKnowledge and experienceDemonstrated government policy development, cross agency consultation and implementation of policies in the Australian Government.Demonstrated leadership experience, including setting and influencing direction, motivating teams and establishing culture.Demonstrated management experience, including experience marshalling skills to deliver on a program of work, team planning, performance management and budget management.Experience in Australia's international relationships or partnerships (desirable).Skills and capabilitiesSound judgment, innovative thinking and strategic analysis skills.Excellent verbal and written communication skills to succinctly, clearly and effectively communicate and consult with a broad range of stakeholders.Demonstrated high-level ability to reason conceptually, negotiate effectively and resolve complex problems.A demonstrated ability to influence, motivate and lead a responsive, skilled and diverse team.Professional integrity and a commitment to building inclusion and diversity in the workplace.Citizenship - To be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.
Security Clearance - This position requires a Negative Vetting Level 2 security clearance. You will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
Pre-employment Check - Your suitability for employment will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process. This process includes a requirement to undergo and satisfy a National Police Check, referee checks, character clearance and where required a pre-employment medical assessment, specified mandatory qualification(s) validation and a probation period of 6 months.
