POSITION:Director of Special Education – 1.0 FTELOCATION:Central AdministrationSALARY:$115,000 – $130,000WORK YEAR:12 Month Calendar – 261 days (plus 25 vacation days & 12 holidays)START DATE:July 1, 2024REPORTS TO:SuperintendentAPPLICATION DEADLINE:May 16, 2024 General Summary Under the direct supervision of the Superintendent, and in accordance with the established policies and procedures of the East Lansing Public School District, the Director of Special Education will provide leadership and direction in the development, implementation, coordination and administration of the district's special education program including coordination with curriculum and staff development, Section 504 services, acting as administrative liaison to the District Crisis Intervention Team and supervision of all special education staff for the district. About the Role Administers all special education for the District while providing educational leadership and program management within special education programs for those in preschool through graduation.Provides coordination, technical direction and guidance in District programs and services including curriculum and instruction, staff and student assignments and transportation for those in special education in the District.Coordinates professional learning for special education personnel, administration, and general educators regarding the education of children with disabilities, health issues, and crisis interventions.Conducts observations, conferences and provides support to staff working in special education.Monitors implementation of pupils' Individualized Education Programs through classroom observations and communication with special education staff.Attends District Individualized Education Program team meetings.Works with the Board of Education, staff members, students, parents, and community groups regarding issues and concerns related to all aspects of educational programming to assure horizontal and vertical continuity and articulation of the District's special education program.Administer the special education budget for the department according to policies of the District and assists in personnel selection as it relates to special education.Prepares reports and processes claims for reimbursement of federal, state and local funds for support of special programs within policies established by the Board and monitors programs and services on a regular basis to assure compliance with current rules.Provides updates, reports and policy recommendations to the Board in areas relating to special education.May be assigned additional functions and responsibilities by the Superintendent as needed. Education, Knowledge and Skills Required State of Michigan Director of Special Education Certification or eligibility for approvalMaster's degree or above with emphasis in special education or closely related fieldValid Michigan special education teaching certificate preferredMinimum of three years successful teaching experience in special educationPrevious administrative experience preferredDemonstrated leadership in special education, curriculum development, supervision and evaluationDemonstrated knowledge of current instructional methodology for special educationHigh level of strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate verbally and in writing to wide variety of audiencesHas experience working with a diverse student population and/or a history of promoting diversity through his/her practices About UsWhy Join ELPS East Lansing Public Schools, home of Michigan State University (MSU) and a neighbor to the state capital, is seeking a dynamic individual to work in our highly diverse school district.
