The Cardiac Surgery Unit is one of the oldest and most important in Australia performing over 500 cases per year. The Unit has the use of multiple operating rooms, ICU for post-operative intensive care beds, and a 32-bed ward, which includes 16 high dependency beds This leadership position offers an opportunity to provide exceptional delivery of patient-focused care within the Cardiac Surgery Unit.About The Royal Melbourne Hospital: The Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH), established in 1848, is Victoria's first public hospital. The RMH's dedicated workforce of 11,000 people provide a comprehensive range of health services. These include specialist medical, surgical, and mental health services, as well as rehabilitation, aged care, outpatient, and community programs. The RMH is located in the heart of the Melbourne Biomedical Precinct, a global research and teaching powerhouse with 25 health service, research, and academic partners.About the Role:As a senior leader, the Director of Cardiac Surgery will partner with the Clinical Director of Surgical Services to foster professional, collaborative relationships and optimise patient access to integrated, multidisciplinary care. This role encompasses clinical and administrative responsibilities, including managing workforce planning, departmental budget adherence, and operational efficiency. The Director will support high-quality care standards by overseeing safety and quality improvement initiatives, conducting mortality and morbidity reviews, and ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations.Additionally, the Director will drive research and education, mentoring staff and facilitating departmental learning activities. They will also contribute to The Royal Melbourne Hospital's mission by promoting The Melbourne Way values and a culture of Speaking Up for Safety. The Cardiac Surgery Unit performs over 500 advanced procedures annually, maintaining a crucial role within the hospital and broader healthcare community.About You:The ideal candidate will be a distinguished leader with strong managerial expertise and exceptional communication skills, enabling professional and collaborative engagement across multidisciplinary teams. You will hold a medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) with specialist registration in Cardiothoracic Surgery, coupled with a proven record of advancing healthcare quality and safety standards.
