Director - National Commission for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People (Affirmative Measure - Indigenous)Adelaide SA, Brisbane QLD, Canberra ACT, Darwin NT, Hobart TAS, Melbourne VIC, Perth WA, Sydney NSWAs the National Commission will not commence operations until 13 January 2025, this recruitment process is being managed by the Department of Social Services. As part of Safe and Supported: the National Framework for Protecting Australia's Children 2021-2031 (Safe and Supported), the Australian Government is establishing a legislated, independent and empowered National Commissioner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People (National Commissioner).The National Commissioner will be dedicated to protecting and promoting the rights, interests and wellbeing of First Nations children and young people across a range of issues, including the over representation of Indigenous children in out-of-home care. The National Commission is seeking energetic, motivated and experienced staff to join two new sections which will support work of the National Commissioner.The key duties of the position include:Directly report to the National Commissioner, responsible for advising them throughout the beginning of their tenureSupport the development of a forward workplan for the National CommissionImplement genuine engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and consult with target audiences and stakeholders on the role of the CommissionerBuild and maintain positive relationships using collaborative skills with a wide range of both internal and external stakeholders, including state and territory governments, commissioners, advocates and guardians, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander partners to anticipate and respond to stakeholder needs and expectationsDirect a small team to research and analyse information and data from a wide range of sources to inform policy and legislation developmentGuide policy and communications activity for the National Commissioner, such as drafting of reports, media releases, speaking notes, and interview preparationSupervise and develop staff to build a high performing team through coaching, feedback and encouraging career developmentSupport a team to provide secretariat and logistical support for the National Commissioner's engagement and consultation program and other engagement as neededWork closely with other areas within the National Commission and with other agencies including the Department of Social Services, including developing and implementing strategies to improve these connections.The filling of this vacancy is intended to constitute an affirmative measure under section 8(1) of the 'Racial Discrimination Act 1975'.
