The key duties of the position include:The Maritime Jurisdiction Advice section is within the Oceans, Reefs, Coasts and the Antarctic Branch. The section comprises a diverse team with capabilities in geospatial and data science, geodesy, maritime law and marine zone management that work to deliver certainty, stability, predictability and visibility to Australia's international and domestic maritime boundaries.

The roleThe Director will perform an important leadership role in the Maritime Jurisdiction Advice section to deliver both domestic and international programs of work.
In the domestic context, the section is responsible for delivering stable and secure maritime boundaries for Australia and a digital framework for the management of Australia's offshore boundaries. This includes:
Defining the authoritative location of Australia's national and domestic maritime boundaries.Establishing the technical and administrative framework for managing, declaring and publicising Australia's maritime boundaries.Contributing to the development of internationally recognised standards for the digital exchange of maritime boundary data.Advising the Australian Government on maritime boundary matters, including the location and interaction of maritime boundaries as part of the decision-making processes or the Australian Government.In the international context, the section is leading work programs on behalf of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to improve regional security in line with Australian foreign policy objectives. This includes:
Collaborating with Southeast Asian partners to build capability to develop marine resources and address maritime challenges via training, technical advice and cooperation.Building skills, knowledge and abilities within Small Island Developing States to publish and maintain authoritative maritime boundaries in international standards.The Director will drive and shape Geoscience Australia's Maritime Jurisdiction Advice work program to ensure that the agency delivers value in the management of Australia's marine jurisdiction and supports Australia's national and international strategic interests.
In this role you will:Lead, inspire, and manage a dynamic, multi-disciplinary team to ensure successful delivery of domestic and international work programs.Engage extensively with Commonwealth policy agencies, regulators, and the States to identify strategic needs, drive development of the technical processes that underpin the implementation of the Seas and Submerged Lands Act, and maintain trust and credibility in Geoscience Australia as a high-quality advisor.Grow and maintain collaborative partnerships to deliver complex or sensitive projects that have strategic and geopolitical significance.Apply strategic vision and judgement to build capabilities and focus the capacity of the team to anticipate and meet existing and emerging Government priorities.Provide timely, high-quality, and high-level advice and information to senior management and government officials on matters related to marine policy and regulation.Adopt robust program management practices to plan, monitor, and report on program objectives and outcomes.Demonstrate strong financial, contract, and risk management, and develop and implement appropriate strategies to balance short and long-term priorities.Represent and position Geoscience Australia in relevant forums and promote the work of the section both within the agency and to external stakeholders, being mindful of sensitivities.To be successful in the role you will:Be part of a high-performing leadership team in the Branch, working collaboratively with peers across the organisation to support Geoscience Australia's Senior and Executive leadership through your expertise, problem-solving, and advice to enable delivery of Geoscience Australia's Strategy 2028.Demonstrate a capability to gain new knowledge outside of your core professional background and work with professionals with scientific, legal, and policy backgrounds.Be an influential communicator, with excellent written and oral communication skills, supported by highly developed interpersonal skills.Demonstrate excellent stakeholder relationship skills and engage with internal and external stakeholders at all levels to solve complex problems and support government priorities.Demonstrate a commitment and ability to rapidly learn new concepts and apply significant judgement in order to manage highly complex and sensitive issues.Commit to leading a diverse team, managing performance, and fostering teamwork.Demonstrate a commitment to building a positive and inclusive culture.Demonstrate public service professionalism and probity by adopting a principled approach and adherence to the APS Values and Code of Conduct.Required skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualificationsQualifications and/or extensive experience in one or more relevant areas including maritime or environmental law, geospatial, or international engagement.Experience working at the science/policy/legal interface.A deep understanding of the UN Convention of the Law of the Sea is highly desirable.Experience working with international collaborators or implementing international programs in politically sensitive areas is desirable.To ApplyPlease visit the careers page of our website to submit your application via our e-Recruit system.
