Who we areWe are Australia's only national institution focused exclusively on the diverse history,cultures, and heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australia. We house theworld's most important and extensive collection of cultural information and material, andwe provide leadership, publish, and promote greater understanding and appreciation ofAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We create opportunities for people the worldover to engage with and be transformed by the knowledge, the culture, and the story ofAustralia's Indigenous peoples. We are Australia's national institution for leadership inAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research.
What we doWe care for a priceless collection, including films, photographs, video, and audio recordingsas well as the world's largest collection of printed and other resource materials forAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies. We undertake and encourage scholarly,ethical, community-based research in a variety of sectors, including health, native title,languages, and education. Our publishing house, Aboriginal Studies Press, regularlypublishes outstanding writing that promotes Australian Indigenous cultures.Our activities affirm and raise awareness of the richness and diversity of Aboriginal andTorres Strait Islander cultures and histories.
Our functions are established under the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait
These functions are to:• provide access to a national collection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
culture and heritage.• use that national collection to strengthen and promote knowledge and
understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage.• provide leadership in the fields of:
? Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research; and? activities relating to collections associated with Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander peoples; and use (including use for research) of that nationalcollection and other collections containing Aboriginal and Torres StraitIslander culture and heritage.
• lead and promote collaborations and partnerships among the academic,research, non-government, business and government sectors andAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in support of the otherfunctions of the Institute.
• provide advice to the Commonwealth on the situation and status of Aboriginaland Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage.
We are an Australian Government statutory authority. The Minister responsible for AIATSIS isthe Hon Linda Burney MP, Minister for Indigenous Australians.

About the Group
The purpose of the Research and Education Group (REG) is to: define, lead, produce, share andsupport cutting edge research and learning by, with, and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait
About the Program Area
The AIATSIS Centre for Australian Languages (ACAL) sits within the Research and EducationGroup and undertakes community-based research and projects with the aim of supporting theactive practice and strengthening of Indigenous languages. This includes projects to supportlanguage reawakening through access to archival materials, the documentation of languagessupporting the production of materials such as dictionaries and assisting communities inachieving these goals. Our work is strongly community focused and supports Indigenous controlof their languages and associated data. We take a national approach to understanding thesituation and status of Indigenous languages and drawing on this we provide advice togovernments on all aspects of language policy, projects, and support.
About the RoleWe are seeking a high performing and talented Research Director to lead the AIATSIS Centrefor Australian Languages (ACAL). You will be part of the management team of the Researchand Education Group, which provides leadership in research and ethical engagement andinforms Indigenous and government decision-making and nation building.Responsibilities of the role include
• leading a small team to design and undertake cutting edge community-based researchand projects with the aim of supporting the active practice and strengthening of
• providing strategic direction to the team to create opportunities for knowledge exchange,develop rigorous data and evidence and provide critical advice to Indigenous peoples,governments, and others to strengthen the recognition, protection, and resurgence of
• develop and lead new projects and initiatives, which will diversify your work over time.• provide intellectual leadership and develop the research capability across the group and
• work collaboratively across AIATSIS to strategically shape the organisation's culture and• contribute to problem solving across AIATSIS, which requires high level planning,management, and stakeholder engagement.

The ideal candidate will come with the following cultural capabilities:• understands Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander business within the agency and theoutcomes the agency is responsible for delivering.
• understands the current issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people withregard to Indigenous languages and the historical context of these issues.
• the ability to communicate respectfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanderstakeholders, clients, and colleagues.
• the capability to privilege Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' voices,experiences, and perspectives in their work.
The ideal candidate will come with the skills, experience and attributes shown below:
• demonstrated capability in strategic research leadership, including designing programsof work, working collaboratively across teams and organisations, building partnerships,and seeing projects through to completion.
• ability to lead and inspire a team through excellent people management, personalcompetence and drive, commitment to organisational culture and resilience andcapability to manage change.
• experience in garnering and managing resources, including managing a budget, as wellas reporting for internal and external stakeholders.
• strong understanding of ethical research practice and a demonstrated track record ofhigh-quality impactful research, program and/or policy design, which includes a record ofpublished work or equivalent public sector contribution in a relevant area or discipline.
• capacity to communicate ideas with influence, adapt to audiences, develop strategicpartnerships, and manage stakeholders.
• suitable qualifications such as a postgraduate qualification in linguistics or a closelyallied discipline, and a demonstrated interest in Australian Indigenous languages.
