About the Group The Office of the CEO (OCEO) is at the forefront of the Institute, liaising with external stakeholders including, but not limited to: Ministerial Offices; Commonwealth and State and Territory Departments; including the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA), the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the Office of the Arts (OfTA) as well as other Indigenous Portfolio Bodies; the Australian Diplomatic Core; relevant Embassies; and Cultural and other Institutions both domestically and abroad.

About the Program Area The International Engagement and Cultural Diplomacy (IECD) team sits within the OCEO to strategically build and maintain key relationships focusing on internal opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, history, and culture within the remit of the role and functions of AIATSIS.
The team contributes to key relationships where mutually beneficial work is identified between parties.
This can extend to work involving Memorandums of Understanding whereby Joint Work Plans can be established; reciprocal exhibitions, cultural exchanges, and sharing of diplomatic practices.
Our engagement is informed by the diverse nature of Indigenous peoples', cultures, stories, and histories from around the world and has a direct benefit to all communities we work with.
The team works closely with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), through specific countries' region desks, their respective Posts, and the Office of the Ambassador for First Nations Peoples as well as Embassies in Australia and overseas.

Role Summary The Director, International Engagement and Cultural Diplomacy is an exciting opportunity to lead a small team focusing on strategic relations to safeguard AIATSIS' contribution to enriching global First Nations efforts across collection and care of cultural heritage material, education, research, and culture revitalization.

Key Responsibilities The Director International Engagement and Cultural Diplomacy is responsible for providing strategic direction and leadership, undertaking work with a high level of judgement.
The successful candidate is expected to apply and maintain an extensive understanding of the role and responsibilities of the Institute, incorporating a comprehensive understanding of the impact on the wider political and community context in which it operates and be effective, versatile, and action-oriented.
As a part of the leadership cohort, the Director IECD is required to work collaboratively across the whole of the Institute with the Executive Director, in particular Collection Services Group in relation to exhibitions, Research and Education Group focusing on languages and the Partnership and Engagement Group with respect to the return of Cultural Heritage program, to achieve AIATSIS goals and strategically shape the Institute's culture and future direction.
The position requires strategic thinking and forward planning, formulation and coordination of policies, analytical skills to resolve complex issues, and to design and manage projects.
The position encompasses all aspects of staff and team management including supervision, training, professional development, and performance management.
The Director of IECD currently reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer.

The key duties of the position include: Leading a small team to work collaboratively across the Institute to deliver on international priorities, including those identified in the AIATSIS Strategic Plan 2024-2029.Leading and oversight of the strategic direction and operations of the IECD team ensuring effective and efficient operations, including administration, resource and financial management, as well as staff management and development, recruitment, and planning.Building and maintaining key relationships for international cooperation and providing strategic advice to the CEO to extend the reach and expertise of AIATSIS internationally.Advocating support for AIATSIS' international initiatives.Representing AIATSIS at various network and stakeholder meetings, forums, and conferences.Delivering an AIATSIS International Engagement Strategy and overseeing its implementation and review.Preparation of articulate written correspondence, including grant applications, meeting agendas, briefs, and other relevant correspondence.Leading internal processes to deliver reciprocal joint work plan activities for implementation.Managing a register of Memorandums of Understanding, both domestically and with international partners and initiating reviews and extensions as required.Oversight of logistical support for International Delegations, including internal and external stakeholder meetings and key events.In consultation with relevant areas across the Institute and in line with legislative requirements, develop procedures to best support the Institute when undertaking international engagement.Keeping abreast of and communicating changes affecting international engagement. #J-18808-Ljbffr
