Located within the College of Education, Psychology, and Social Work, the Flinders University Institute for Mental Health and Wellbeing (FIMHWELL) is a multi-disciplinary research institute dedicated to developing evidence-based solutions that create meaningful change and improve mental health and wellbeing.
The opportunity FIMHWELL seeks to appoint a Level E Director, Flinders University Institute for Mental Health and Wellbeing. Based in Adelaide, South Australia and reporting to the Dean of Research for the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work, the Director will provide leadership within the College, drive the Institute's strategic initiatives and ensure their successful implementation. In close collaboration with the Institute Manager and College leadership team, including the Dean (Research) and key leaders in the Research Excellence Framework, the Director will shape and advance the Institute's research agenda.
As a prominent research leader, the Director is expected to secure external fellowships and funding, lead pioneering research initiatives, and cultivate a strong, innovative research culture at both the discipline and University levels. This role involves building and sustaining strategic partnerships with industry, government, and other tertiary institutions, fostering impactful research collaborations that enhance the Institute's national and international profile.
The Director will provide strategic leadership and direction to staff and students, including guiding the development of research projects in key areas of focus for the Institute and offering expert feedback on grant applications and publication strategies to ensure research excellence. The position also includes a role in attracting and recruiting top-tier international and domestic researchers to the Institute.
About you PhD qualified or equivalent in a field directly related to mental health and wellbeing, you will demonstrate a robust and sustained record of research excellence, with significant contributions to advancing the field through lead-authored high-impact publications and successful acquisition of substantial, competitive external research grants.
You will have proven experience in:
Global Leadership and Impactful Research: Possess a globally recognised reputation for leading groundbreaking and innovative research initiatives. Demonstrated success in driving research projects that have had a significant impact, evidenced by high citation rates, substantial industry engagement, and a measurable influence on policy and/or practice at both national and international levels.Transdisciplinary Integration: Extensive experience in integrating diverse academic disciplines into impactful research initiatives.Strategic Collaborations: Proven ability to establish, nurture, and sustain strategic research collaborations with leading national and international partners, diversification of industry partnerships towards enhancing the global research landscape in mental health and wellbeing.Strategic Vision and Resourcing: Demonstrate leadership with the ability to shape and drive the strategic direction of the Institute. Extensive experience in identifying, securing, and managing large-scale external research income, and effectively acquiring and managing resources to support and expand the Institute's research agenda.Senior Academic Leadership and Project Management: Significant experience in a senior academic or research leadership role, with research project management expertise. Proven ability to lead and manage large, multidisciplinary teams to achieve strategic research objectives and drive innovation.Mentorship and Capacity Building: A strong track record of mentoring early and mid-career researchers (ECRs and MCRs) and building a sustainable research legacy. Commitment to spearheading initiatives to grow the honours and HDR cohort, with a strong focus on industry engaged honours and HDR program.Commitment to Inclusivity and Professional Growth: Committed to creating an inclusive, collaborative, and supportive research environment that fosters innovation, professional development, and continuous improvement.Term and remuneration The term of the appointment is five years on a full-time basis, with the potential to be a continuing role. Relocation assistance will also be provided if required.
