The APVMA's Risk Assessment Capability program is seeking applications for a Director Health to co-manage a close-knit team delivering high quality regulatory decisions to protect the health of Australians.
Located in either Canberra ACT or regional Armidale NSW, you will gain experience in the Australian Public Service, have access to a variety of flexible working arrangements, and be at the forefront of safeguarding public health.
The Role The Director is responsible for coordinating the provision of high level technical advice on human health and safety matters relating to the regulation of agricultural chemicals and veterinary medicines.
They will manage the process of pre- and post-marketing risk assessment and chemical evaluation undertaken by the APVMA and external service providers.
In this role, you will ensure that guidelines and guidance documents relating to human health and safety are contemporary and reflect international best practice, and prepare high-level written documents incorporating scientific/technical considerations.
As one of two Directors in the Health team, you will also lead, manage and coach staff, and build relationships with external service providers, internal and external clients, and stakeholders – including commonwealth, state and industry bodies and non-government organisations.
To be a strong contender for the role, you will have: Demonstrated high-level experience and analytical skills in human health and safety assessment and toxicology, preferably in the context of a regulatory environment.
Ability to solve problems, show judgement, pay attention to detail and make decisions based on sound science and risk analysis.
Highly developed interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication, liaison and negotiation skills.
Highly developed leadership and management skills that demonstrate a commitment to coaching and developing staff, including a demonstrated ability to manage budgets, complex workloads, set priorities and gain commitment from staff and external providers to meet deadlines.
Knowledge of the regulatory and legislative environment of the APVMA.
Familiarity with international best practices related to preparing high quality risk assessments for human health and safety of agricultural and veterinary chemicals.
Demonstrated ability to develop, manage and implement policy and program initiatives within a section or specialist area.
Appropriate tertiary qualifications in toxicology, pharmacology, physiology or any related biological science.
