Position overview The Director provides timely and strategic support and advice to the Chief Justice and Chief Executive Officer and Principal Registrar (CEO/PR) relating to key aspects of the management and operations of the FCFCOA, its Judges, Registrars, Court Child Experts and staff. Together the Courts comprise 122 judges; hundreds of legal, social science and related support staff; registries and circuits across 43 locations; and are responsible for over 100,000 filings per year. The role forms part of a National Operations Team working across both Courts.
The Director will work closely with the Chief Justice, CEO/PR, Senior Executives (including the Deputy Principal Registrar, Executive Director - National Registrar Operations and Practice, the Executive Director - Court Children's Service, and the Director - Registrar and Migration Operations) and the broader National Operations Team across family law, migration and general federal law-related work. The primary areas of focus will be on key policy and practice initiatives aimed at enhancing the ability of the Courts to respond to family violence and initiatives to enhance the Courts accessibility and inclusivity to priority population groups in accordance with the strategic objectives of the Chief Justice and CEO/PR of the Courts. This Director will provide policy and strategic advice and support and will lead and contribute to consultation and design efforts across key projects. The role will also provide in-house training and education relevant to the work of Judges, Registrars, Court Child Experts and staff in trauma informed practice, family violence and culturally responsive and inclusive practice.
The Director will work with Senior Executives and National Operations staff in liaising with Government, the legal profession, other key stakeholders and the public more broadly on keys matters relating to family violence, access to justice, and other priority issues relating to the Courts.
The Director will have a key role in providing strategic support to the Courts' Indigenous Family Liaison Program, Cultural Liaison Program and other programs focused on increasing access to justice for priority population groups.
The role is multi-faceted, requiring highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, together with exceptional agility and organisational skills. The occupant will demonstrate leadership through the performance of all functions.
The key duties of the position include Key Responsibilities and Duties The key responsibilities of this multi-dimensional role include:
Strategic support and advice - Access to Justice and Family Violence Providing strategic advice and support to the Chief Justice and CEO/PR on key initiatives focused on enhancing the Courts' ability to respond to family violence and making the Courts more accessible to and inclusive of priority populations, working closely with national operations and other senior officials of the Courts; Providing key strategic support to the Courts' Indigenous Family Liaison Program, Cultural Liaison Program, and other programs focused on increasing access to justice for priority population groups; Internal and external liaison Engaging with internal and external stakeholders on key issues relating to access to justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, people from migrant and refugee backgrounds, people with disability, women, children and young people, people from the LGBTIQA+ community, and people in regional, rural and remote geographical locations. Building and maintaining relationships with the Attorney-General's Department and other key Commonwealth Government Departments on priority issues relating to family violence, access to justice, training and other priority issues relating to the Courts. Leading and contributing to consultation and design efforts with internal and external stakeholders, including judges, Registrars, Court Child Experts and staff, Commonwealth, State and Territory Government agencies, the legal profession, State and National Law Societies and Bar Associations, and Court users on key policy and practice initiatives aimed at enhancing the ability of the Courts to respond to family violence and make the Courts more accessible and inclusive to priority population groups in accordance with the strategic objectives of the Chief Justice and CEO/Principal Registrar of the Court. Training, education and development Procuring, developing and providing high level in-house training, education and development programs for Judges, Registrars, Court Child Experts and staff of the Courts, focusing on trauma informed practice, family violence, and culturally responsive and inclusive practice; Developing and imbedding a trauma informed, culturally responsive and inclusive approach throughout the Courts' case management pathways in collaboration with key executive operational staff; Conducting one-on-one coaching sessions to judges and staff of the Courts in relation to trauma informed practice, family violence and culturally responsive and inclusive practice; Liaising with Government and other key stakeholders on training and education programs for family law, migration law and general federal law stakeholders. Other responsibilities Supporting the Chief Justice, CEO/PR and various Court Committees and working groups with initiatives relating to judicial education, professional development and wellbeing, family violence, access to justice, and research. Drafting and contributing to high level correspondence, including submissions to inquiries, presentations, and reports. Selection Criteria The successful applicant will need to have:
Expert skills and knowledge in the fields of family violence, trauma-informed practice, culturally responsive and inclusive practice and demonstrated ability to enhance legal and social service system design to address family violence risk and access to justice barriers for marginalised population groups. Highly developed oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with judges and staff of the Courts, external organisations and members of the public. A highly developed ability to model trauma-informed, culturally responsive and inclusive practice in engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, peoples from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, migrant and refugee cohorts, people with disability, women, children and young people, people from the LGBTIQA+ community, and people in regional, rural and remote geographical locations. Highly developed interpersonal, liaison, and negotiation skills, including the demonstrated ability to build and maintain strategic professional relationships with key stakeholders, represent the Courts at a senior level, when interacting with the public and legal profession, and the ability to influence behaviour and attitudes at all levels. Well-developed training and development skills, including the ability to procure, design and deliver training programs to large cohorts of people and to provide one-on-one coaching. Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and as part of a team, and to drive change in a manner that brings people together. Demonstrated ability to work in an environment requiring utmost tact, diplomacy and discretion. Demonstrated high-level organisational skills, including the ability to manage competing priorities effectively, and exercise sound judgment in decision-making in a high-pressured environment. Demonstrated experience and understanding, or ability to acquire such knowledge quickly, of the relevant family law, migration and general federal law legislation; and the practices and procedures of the FCFCOA (Division 1) and the FCFCOA (Division 2). #J-18808-Ljbffr
