About the team The Australian Space Agency is a specialist division within DISR that provides leadership on civil space capability to uplift Australia's use of space.
The Agency ensures that Australia's space activities contribute to improved productivity, more resilient communities, environmental sustainability, furthering scientific knowledge, and strengthening national security.
The Agency's functions are to: Lead and coordinate space policy across government to ensure a coherent approach Shape and grow Australian space capability for the benefit of the nation Lead international civil space partnerships to create opportunities for Australia and support foreign policy objectives Promote a responsible space sector through education, technology and regulation Advance understanding of the contribution of space to a productive, resilient, and sustainable Australia The opportunity The Space Policy Branch is responsible for providing high quality policy advice on the space sector to achieve civil space outcomes to the benefit of Australia.
The branch works across all levels of government to coordinate space policy.
Space Policy Branch focuses on: Civil space policy alignment Space national security Community engagement As the Director, Civil Space Policy, you will work across government, industry, and academia to ensure Australia continues to benefit from the free and open use of space.

The key duties of the position include: As the Director, Civil Space Policy, you will consult and coordinate with all levels of Australian government and the broader sector so space can contribute to the Minister's objectives and the Government's broader agenda of a Future Made in Australia.
You will be responsible for development of policies and advice in areas such as: The sustainable use of space as a usable and beneficial environment for Australia The elements of a successful Australian spaceflight ecosystem Space sector development and coordination Space workforce policy in alignment with whole of government settings Engagement with state and territory jurisdictions to ensure space policy alignment on issues of national concern.
A key element of the role is ensuring the successful facilitation of the Space Coordination Committee, State & Territory Space Coordination Committee, and Senior Space Committee of Australian Governments.
In carrying out these key duties, you will: Set strategic direction, develop long-term plans, and implement operational strategies.
Provide strategic advice, problem solving and issues management for internal and external stakeholders in relation to complex and potentially controversial matters.
Develop and manage key strategic relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, promoting the agency's business objectives.
Coordinate and assume responsibility for complex or sensitive projects or work programs that have strategic, political, and/or operational significance.
Provide strategic direction to your team, including developing business plans, strategies and priorities, and monitor workflow and performance.
Provide leadership in implementing and promoting a climate of change and continuous improvement through coaching others, providing performance feedback, conflict resolution, and encouraging career development.
Identify, manage, and evaluate risk in all decision making and delivery of outcomes.
Apply knowledge of and comply with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and agency guidelines and regulations, in addition to the Australian Public Service (APS) Values and Code of Conduct.
To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.
Positions require a Baseline security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
Notes The department offers flexible work opportunities for many roles.
This vacancy is Adelaide or Canberra based, although flexible or remote work arrangements may be considered.
