About the Role
This is a fixed term SES 1 role
Applied Analytics remit in Data and digital at the Department of Transport and Planning involves applying data science and machine learning techniques to solve complex problems. The Director leads a team of experts who use data-driven insights to inform decision-making and optimise outcomes for the department and its stakeholders.
The Director of Applied Analytics is responsible for defining the vision and roadmap for the Applied Analytics function, as well as overseeing the delivery of high-quality advanced data products and services.
The Director also collaborates with other Data and digital leaders, as well as external partners, to ensure alignment and integration of data initiatives across the department.
The Director of Applied Analytics requires a strong background in data science, machine learning, statistics, programming, and business analysis, as well as excellent leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills. The Director must be able to foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the Applied Analytics team, as well as across the department.
Position Outcomes
Director, Applied Analytics involves a strategic approach to integrating advanced analytics into departmental functions. The director leads the development and implementation of an applied analytics roadmap, aligning with departmental objectives to support evidence-based decision-making by identifying data needs across various functions. This includes overseeing the development and use of sophisticated data exploration and visualisation techniques, enabling the extraction of valuable insights and supporting a data-driven culture across the department.
The director is responsible for delivering effective data solutions that enhance the efficiency and safety of transport operations, continually identifying and implementing improvements in data analytics capabilities. They provide leadership in staying abreast of technology trends, contributing to innovation in data management and analytics.
Additionally, the role involves significant stakeholder management, fostering collaborative partnerships within and outside the government. It requires adherence to departmental policies, effective budget and resource management, and promoting a diverse, inclusive workplace culture. The director also offers authoritative advice to senior stakeholders, aiding in strategic planning and responding to complex issues, thereby supporting the broader Data & Digital objectives and embracing organizational changes.

Qualifications and role specific requirements
Mandatory
Machine Learning and AI Development:  Proven experience in developing, testing, and deploying machine learning or artificial intelligence solutions using frameworks such as MLflow (Databricks), TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras, Scikit-learn, etc.
Programming Proficiency : Strong proficiency in programming languages and tools for data analysis and manipulation, including Python, R, SQL, etc.
Cloud Computing : Familiarity with cloud computing platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, and experience in leveraging these platforms for deploying machine learning and AI solutions.
A relevant tertiary qualification in data analytics, data governance & machine learning or related data science discipline is highly desirable.
