Senior Team Leader (Exec Level 1 equivalent) - AUKUS Strategy Coord & Futures The mission of the Australian Federal Police is to provide dynamic and effective law enforcement to the people of Australia. Applications are sought from suitably qualified individuals wishing to be considered for the role of Senior Team Leader (Band 8), Strategy Coordination and Futures within the newly created AUKUS Command. A pool of suitable candidates will be created to fill further anticipated vacancies across National Security Portfolio.
Business Area The AFP's National Security Portfolio is responsible for matters involving Australia's national security frameworks, including counter-terrorism and foreign interference, and its operational implementation, plus aviation, protection, security and AUKUS.
The AUKUS Command is responsible for delivery of the AFP's security overlay in support of the Australian Nuclear Submarine Program under the AUKUS initiative. AUKUS Command also has strategic responsibility for delivery of Protective Services to Defence establishments under the Defence MOU, with a significant focus on building and supporting a future-ready Protective Service Officer (PSO) workforce.
The role As a Senior Team Leader in the AFP, you play a pivotal role in developing people, managing change and influencing behaviours that lead to a supportive culture that respects the perspectives, talents and value of everyone. All AFP appointees contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicants will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below and in accordance with Band 8 work-level standards.
Senior Team Leaders (Band 8) play a pivotal role in taking autonomous responsibility for the resources, outcomes and performance of one or more teams, often in demanding or complex environments, and invariably deliver on the desired outcomes. As the Senior Team Leader (Snr TL) AUKUS Strategy Coordination and Futures (ASCF), you will report to the Coordinator AUKUS Strategy Coordination and Futures (CASCF) and will work under the broad direction of AUKUS Command Senior executives. You will be responsible for developing, leading and managing multiple diverse teams within the AUKUS Command to deliver a high level of outcomes, including the development and implementation of AUKUS strategy, policies, practices, processes and workflows in support of AFP and AUKUS command objectives.
You will have the capacity to think strategically, demonstrate a high-level of decision making and judgement, possess, or could quickly obtain AFP strategic awareness and business acumen. You will work in close collaboration with CASCF and the AUKUS Senior Executive team to manage risks, operationalise strategic direction and develop an agile approach to deliver command services to meet the needs of the executive while working collaboratively and cohesively with each other and key internal and external stakeholders.
To be successful in the Snr TL role, you will work closely with areas within the AFP to develop and implement strategies that support operational delivery and drive national consistency across the AUKUS command. You will provide a high level of support to CASCF while developing a culture of inclusiveness, commitment, and recognition amongst your teams. You will be required to display an innovative mind-set, think strategically and demonstrate sound judgement and decision making on a regular basis. Relationship management, workflow prioritisation, and value-added coordination and development of high-quality strategic reports and provision of verbal briefings that inform decision making are essential.
The position is located at the Edmund Barton Building, Canberra and assigned to the Support Working Pattern in accordance with the AFP Enterprise Agreement.
Key Responsibilities As the Senior Team Leader AUKUS Strategy Coordination & Futures (ASCF) you will lead and guide teams to manage and deliver AUKUS Command priorities to a high standard. You will:
Provide high quality advice to the AUKUS Executive Team to inform decision making and support the delivery of AUKUS Command priorities and operational outcomes. Work closely with the AUKUS Command Executive Team to build awareness of priorities and deliver these through engagements across the AFP and with partners. Provide direction and oversight to Team Leaders within ASCF, sharing information on priorities, challenges and opportunities. Lead AUKUS engagement with AFP support areas, representing AUKUS interests and priorities to inform the development and implementation of policy and strategies. Build and maintain effective engagement and partnerships (internal and external) with AFP members, executive and support teams across the organisation to support AUKUS Command executive. Support the AUKUS Leadership Team to deliver on AUKUS strategic priorities. With ASCF Team Leaders you will:
Build a collaborative and situationally aware team environment to ensure outputs are met, maximise team skillsets and build team capability so all team members can work across a full spectrum of tasks at short notice. Develop, lead and shape AUKUS responses and activities across the Command to ensure a consolidated and unified Command position is provided on issues and tasks. Continuously monitor opportunities for improvement in processes, with consideration to issues or changes in environment to ensure ASCF remains adaptive and responsive to the needs of the Command and the AFP. Minimum Requirements You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application. A minimum of two years previous Leadership experience. A Negative Vetting 2 (Top Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one. Demonstrated attention to detail and excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including high-level writing, editing and presentation skills. Have proven experience that demonstrates excellent stakeholder relationship skills. This includes demonstrated experience in the provision of insightful, persuasive and trusted advice to a diverse range of senior stakeholders, particularly in relation to building enabling capabilities and processes to support operational objectives. A formal tertiary qualification or substantial work experience relevant to National Security is desirable but not essential. Position Notes This role is an AFP Band 8 (APS Executive Level 1 equivalent) level role. This role is located in ACT and applicants are expected to be based in ACT. Proof of a minimum of two COVID-19 vaccinations (or one dose if the Janssen vaccine was used) will be required if an offer of employment is made.
