As part of the expansion of our Detail Design capability delivering the Hunter Class Frigate, we currently have a number of exciting opportunities for Design Managers within our Maritime Australia business.For thesenew roles, we are seeking four experienced design managers with experience in either hull and primary structure, steel fabrication, layouts/outfit/arrangement or naval routed systems (electrical, mechanical/piping and HVAC) and to lead our discipline delivery teams based across Osborne (South Australia), Melbourne (Victoria) or Henderson (Western Australia).
About the OPPORTUNITY In this role you will provide technical leadership, quality assurance, processes development and improvement as well as undertake designer management and development for your design team of up to 60 designers.
You will ensure that the following are in place and appropriate for success of the project; the technical infrastructure (i.e.
toolsets); the technical methodology and processes; technical experience and skill level of the team.
You will: Work with Head of Engineering/Project to deliver all aspects of Detail Design deliverables including: support to System Owners during Stage 1 early design; spatial integration during Stage 2 and production outputs during Stage 3; change assessment and embodiment, PQ & NC closure throughout the life of the project Set priorities for your domain to ensure delivery of engineering effort; coordinate work activities with other stakeholders, both internal and external to Detail Design Provide leadership and direction in solving technical issues, including by directly contributing to the analysis on complex technical problems to create solutions where precedent may not exist Manage the development of physical integration strategies (e.g.
service route strategy) with the relevant system and/ or functional engineering managers, that will support the development of an optimised design solution, taking into account the many conflicting design constraints Work with the Detail Design Project Management Team to plan the execution of scopes of work, including estimating, scheduling, setting resource demand and subsequent management of task execution Be familiar with the use of IT information systems to facilitate configuration control of the Bill of Materials and management of parts and their associated information attributes that will support design integration Own the enablement of technical delivery for your Detail Design domain, by ensuring resources are SQEP, processes and procedures are fit for purpose and tools and systems are effective Build and maintain networks across the wider BAE Systems organization, sharing and receiving best practice from BAE Systems UK Naval Ships as they design and build the Type 26 Global Combat Ship Maintaining the alignment of the core detail design tools, processes, policies and methodology between BAE Systems UK Naval Ships & the BAE Systems Maritime Australia Be responsible for the management of sub-contracted Detail Design work Accepts the responsibility for and demonstrates a visible commitment to safety, quality and continuous improvement within Detail Design, and across the wider value stream of the business About YOU Extensive Detail Design leadership and management experience, ideally within a shipbuilding or maritime sustainment environment, otherwise within a relevant adjacent industry Substantial leadership experience managing large technical teams The ability to support multiple stakeholders with competing priorities Minimum two-year Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree in Engineering Excellent communication skills Excellent stakeholder engagement and management experience Demonstrated proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite The ability to manage and analyse engineering data from multiple sources across a broad range of disciplines A focus on safety in the workplace Existing, or the ability to obtain, NV1 clearance and meet all require Export Control requirements We believe in hiring for potential, we know that some candidates hesitate if they don't tick all the boxes.
