The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) works to enhance our agricultural, fisheries and forestry industries. We create new and maintain existing agricultural export opportunities, to provide gains for Australian agriculture. We manage biosecurity risks to Australia to protect our multi-billion-dollar agricultural industries and our way of life.
The Office of the Australian Chief Veterinary Officer (OCVO) is a team of scientists and policy makers who support the Australian Chief Veterinary Officer (ACVO) in delivery of their roles and responsibilities. The ACVO is the primary representative of, and advisor to, the Australian Government on all matters relating to the maintenance and improvement of Australia's animal health status and the systems that support it. The ACVO also works to address major animal health issues of national interest, such as the threat of antimicrobial resistance, and enhancing trade and market access for animals and animal products.
The OCVO, in collaboration with the broader department and our external stakeholders, works to mitigate the risks and potential impacts of exotic animal diseases and enhance the protection of Australia's animal health environment.
The job The Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer will support the ACVO in the discharge of their responsibilities, with a particular focus on enhancing engagement in the South East Asia and Pacific region, working with our near neighbours to build their capacity to detect and respond to emergency animal disease threats, and collaborating with a broad range of stakeholders on cross-cutting initiatives such as One Health and delivering outcomes on antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

What we are looking for To be successful for this role you will need to meet the Senior Executive Service capability for the SES band 1 level, and you will have the following (examples included):
Mandatory qualifications To be considered for this position you must have a degree in Veterinary Science or Veterinary Medicine and Surgery from an Australian University or equivalent veterinary qualification recognised in Australia. You must be fully registered, or eligible for full registration, with the relevant Australian state/territory veterinary board and you must maintain this registration whilst employed by the Department.
Security clearance This position requires a Negative Vetting 1 security clearance. The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at the appropriate level for this position.
