Deputy Chief Executive Officer Canberra ACT About the Group The Strategic Operations Group is an enabling services function providing strategic support to the Institute. The group comprises 5 areas covering Office of the Deputy CEO, People Services, Finance, Digital Services and the Central Australia facility (Mparntwe). About the Program Area The Office of the Deputy CEO (ODCEO) provides efficient, effective and contemporary services to key function areas. It supports the delivery of transformation and business improvement projects and other general governance and reporting functions across the agency. The key duties of the position include: The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) is looking for an established and inspiring senior leader with very well developed organisational and influencing skills to join our Executive as a Deputy Chief Executive Officer (DCEO/COO). As DCEO, you will drive delivery on a range of AIATSIS Council and government commitments and priorities through high quality leadership and influence over a range of priority agendas. You will be responsible for contributing to the broader leadership and functions of AIATSIS, actively involved in executive decision-making and representational activities, and work collaboratively to provide strategic leadership and drive a cohesive and high performing organisation. You will drive the purpose of AIATSIS by working in genuine partnership with other group heads across the Institute. The Deputy CEO will report directly to the CEO and will have oversight of approximately 45 staff within the Strategic Operations Group, with staff located in our Canberra and Alice Springs offices. The Deputy CEO must have a demonstrated high level of cultural competence which drives successful, diverse workforces, and uses cultural difference as a strength for more effective decision making, innovation and adaptability. Skills, knowledge and personal attributes You will be a dynamic and energetic leader with exceptional influencing and negotiation skills, and an established record working at senior levels on complex issues. As the role involves high-level senior stakeholder management, our ideal candidate will have demonstrated skills in communicating with technical and general audiences, be adept at engaging with senior public and private sector stakeholders and be able to build and sustain relationships in a complex environment showing high levels of cultural competency. You will need the ability to think strategically, have strong business acumen, be resilient, and forward-looking with strong personal drive and integrity. You will have demonstrated exemplary judgement and have a demonstrated record in managing operational and enterprise risk. You will have the capability to lead a widely distributed team within a fast paced, challenging and evolving environment to deliver. You will have a high-level ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities. You will have demonstrated commitment to and practice of values-based leadership that inspires, empowers, and drives positive change. You will have experience in leading teams in developing innovative strategies and approaches, with strong negotiation skills and the ability to influence organisational outcomes. Notes Remuneration This is a critical senior appointment, and the remuneration package will therefore be structured to attract and retain an outstanding appointee. The package will include an attractive base salary and employer sponsored superannuation. Location The vacancy is based in the Maraga Building on the Acton Peninsula in Canberra. Flexible work arrangements can be negotiated. Assistance with Relocation Removal expenses and/or short-term accommodation assistance may be provided should interstate relocation be involved.
