Primary objective Provide support to young people to maintain connections with family, culture, and community; and provide culturally appropriate advice, guidance and mentoring to Youth Justice staff and relevant stakeholders within Youth Detention.
Context statement The Northern Territory Youth Justice system provides young people social, emotional and wellbeing support; develops education, vocational and life skills; strengthens connection to culture, family, and community; and addresses offending behaviour.
Key duties and responsibilities 1.
Share relevant cultural knowledge and provide advice to Youth Justice staff about working with Aboriginal people.
2.
Assist detainees to understand court and legal processes and participate in throughcare planning to support detainees returning to community.
3.
Develop and implement cultural learning, coaching and mentoring strategies that assist staff in providing high-level services to Aboriginal children and their families consistent with the Youth Justice Model of Care.
4.
Undertake community engagement initiatives as required to build community capacity, enhance self-management skills, and enable connection to family and culture.
5.
Collaborate with colleagues and other stakeholders to achieve shared goals, and ensure the needs, interests and circumstances of Aboriginal detainees are properly considered.
Selection criteria Essential 1.
A comprehensive understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural values, lifestyles, aspirations, and perspectives, coupled with in-depth knowledge of the cultural, social, economic, and political challenges facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Northern Territory.
2.
Demonstrated ability to deliver culturally competent services that effectively address the complex needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people.
3.
Understanding of trauma-informed care and the impact of trauma on young offenders.
4.
Demonstrated understanding of NT Government priorities and departmental strategies, relevant legislation and policies that guide the delivery of Youth Justice services.
5.
Well-developed interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including high level of reporting, and proven capability to build and sustain positive relationships with team members, clients, families, and stakeholders.
6.
Commitment to ongoing learning and willingness to participate in training and professional development to enhance mentoring skills.
Desirable 1.
Advanced Diploma in community services or equivalent, and/or Youth Work Certificate 3 or 4 and/or Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Criminology and Criminal Justice or similar.
