About the RoleWe are seeking a Cultural Heritage Advisor on a fixed term basis, to provide support to theVegetation Management Program, which works toreduce the risk and severity of bushfires through fuel management and building capacity for volunteers and staff in understanding the use of fire prevention and improve knowledge of fire behaviour.This important position provides technical and administrative support to CFA Regions and Districts for the purpose of planning and implementation of fuel reduction strategies and works including planned burning on private land in the country area of Victoria. These activities need to comply with natural and cultural value guidelines and legislation.The role will focus on providing leadership and advice to CFA for the protection of Aboriginal and cultural heritage in Victoria, especially in relation to compliance with the relevant Acts. Support to Traditional Owners with the implementation of the Victorian Traditional Owner Cultural Fire Strategy, and involvement in a number of activities to enable Traditional Owners to apply cultural fire on land where CFA has a role to support landowners and managers, will also be an important aspect of the role.Please note, flexible State-wide work locations will be considered. About YouOur ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the following: Tertiary qualification in Cultural Heritage Management, Archaeology, Science, Natural Resource Management or other relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of relevant qualifications and/or experience.Ideally a Registered Heritage Advisor (but not essential) with knowledge in cultural heritage database applications, procedures and protocols used for the identification, survey, mapping, registration and management of Aboriginal and historic cultural heritage sites.Experience in providing practical advice to mitigate impacts on cultural values in land management activities, preferably related to fire.Experience in working with and understanding current legislation associated with cultural heritage management.Experience in development of policy and procedures coupled with an ability to provide leadership to build member awareness necessary for implementation of appropriate cultural heritage management practices. Understanding of indigenous fire management practices and application of cultural fire by First Nations Peoples.Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to convey information clearly whilst respecting other points of view.Ability to build strong, respectful relationships and networks with Traditional Owner Groups, Registered Aboriginal Parties, Heritage Council Victoria, other fire management organisations and land managers.
