Crown Law operates as a self-funded business unit of the Department of Justice and Attorney General, providing advice and legal representation in all areas of law affecting the public sector and State of Queensland. Crown Law works exclusively for the Queensland State Government, meaning all resources and skills are focused on the government's priorities and legal needs.
Crown Law's extensive pool of experienced lawyers aim to provide the highest standard of legal services that protect and support the government in the public interest. With a total workforce of nearly 300 staff, Crown Law offers a broad range of legal services to all Queensland State Government entities. Crown Law's core expertise spans 19 major areas of law, with a host of speciality areas also offered to clients. Crown Law also provides legal education through workshops, information sessions and legal briefings.
Crown Law is led by the Crown Solicitor, the most senior officer in the practice. The Crown Solicitor is responsible for providing independent legal advice to the Cabinet, the Premier, the Attorney-General, Ministers, Directors-General, and departmental officers on matters of significance to the government. Additionally, as a member of Crown Law's Strategic Leadership Team, the Crown Solicitor is responsible for shaping the practice's strategic direction as well as making informed, difficult decisions based on extensive experience in leading a legal practice and strong understanding of operating within a commercial environment.
To be successful in the position, the incumbent requires a three-fold combination of significant legal expertise (particularly in the areas of public, employment and constitutional law and hold a deep knowledge of the role of the Public Service and its boundaries within the system of government), demonstrated executive leadership experience and a strong commercial, client and customer focus with the ability to create and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders.
The incumbent is required to be admitted as a Legal Practitioner of the Supreme Court of Queensland and enrolled or eligible for enrolment to practice in the Federal and High Courts of Australia.
