Justice and Attorney-General (Organisation site)Townsville Chambers; Northern Queensland Region; Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions; TownsvilleThe Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions is seeking expressions of interest for 3 x PO5 Crown Prosecutors in Townsville Chambers.On behalf of the Crown and the State of Queensland, Crown Prosecutors appear as counsel in superior court trials and a range of other criminal proceedings and undertake circuit work throughout Queensland as required. Crown Prosecutors also mentor, supervise and provide professional development to legal and support staff.About the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions:The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) represents the State of Queensland in criminal cases. The ODPP's significant responsibility is to prosecute criminal matters in the High Court of Australia, Court of Appeal (Qld), Supreme Court, Mental Health Court, District Court, the Childrens Court of Queensland, and the Magistrates Court (in limited locations and matters).About your opportunity:There are two permanent flexible full-time roles available.As a Crown Prosecutor, the incumbent will:Appear as leading counsel in a range of criminal proceedings, including superior court trials.Provide the Director of Public Prosecutions with authoritative advice on questions of criminal law and evidence.Exercise, without supervision, the discretion to initiate, vary and discontinue serious criminal charges.Communicate persuasively with judges, defence counsel, solicitors, police officers, witnesses, victims of crime and court officials regarding matters for prosecution.Motivate and contribute to the professional development and supervision of legal officers and support staff.Active involvement in activities aimed at improving ODPP practices.Identify and address the needs of victims of crime.The successful candidate will demonstrate experience and abilities to:Appear as leading counsel in a range of criminal proceedings, including superior court trials.Apply well-developed interpersonal and communication skills to liaise, consult and negotiate with a diverse range of stakeholders.Motivate and contribute to the professional development and supervision of legal officers and support staff, and possess an ability to identify and address the needs of victims of crime.Develop and maintain a high level of professional competence and ethical standards.Mandatory qualifications, conditions and requirements:You will be admitted as a Legal Practitioner in a State or Territory of Australia (please indicate date of admission).For more information, including the key responsibilities and how to apply, please see the role description linked below.Applications to remain current for 12 months.Job Ad Reference: QLD/606452/24Closing Date: Tuesday, 10th December 2024Further informationWe are committed to building inclusive cultures in the Queensland public sector that respect and promote human rights and diversity.Please ensure you download all attachments and follow the instructions on how to apply.
