Pool Recruitment, Fixed Term contract (to 30 June 2025)Salary commensurate with experience $79,671 to $135,507 pa (restricted practice lawyer range is $74,374 to $75,818) plus superannuationAttractive employee benefits including salary packagingGenerous leave provisions of 5 weeks annual leave plus leave loading, 2 weeks additional paid leave for end of year closureAccess to additional paid leave for health and well-being100m to public transport and onsite staff parking (if available) About the roleWe have excellent opportunities for experienced professionals to join Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia Limited (ALSWA) as Criminal Lawyers in our Perth Office. 
We are seeking Criminal Lawyers who are highly organised, self-motivated with demonstrated ability to appear as an advocate in criminal courts and are passionate about providing high quality legal assistance to Aboriginal people.
Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, society and the issues affecting Aboriginal people is required.
The lawyer is required to provide legal assistance, including appearing as counsel in criminal matters in metropolitan or regional courts, including pleas in mitigation, bail applications and summary trials. You may also be required to appear as counsel in the District and Supreme Courts, including jury trials, and providing advice and mentoring to staff within ALSWA's Perth Criminal Law Unit and regional offices.
Whilst based in ALSWA's Perth office, regular travel to circuit courts at various locations is a requirement. Other responsibilities include weekend court appearances (on a rostered basis).
About youTo be considered for these roles, you will need to meet the following criteria:
Demonstrated experience appearing as counsel in criminal matters including the provision of duty lawyer servicesDemonstrated knowledge of substantive law, the rules of evidence and criminal practice and procedureDemonstrated organisational and time management skills with the ability to work under pressureDemonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team comprising legal and non-legal staff with a willingness to learn and share knowledge with othersHighly developed communication skills (interpersonal, written and verbal) with experience in conflict resolutionHighly developed conceptual and analytical skills.Ability to travel when requiredYou must be able to hold a current WA Practice Certificate About our benefitsWe have a friendly, caring and diverse work environment.
