The Organisation Katherine West Health Board (KWHB), established in 1998, is an industry-renowned provider of comprehensive, culturally secure primary health care services in the Northern Territory.
As a fully accredited Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation, KWHB is funded by both Australian and Northern Territory Government healthcare grants.
They deliver preventative, clinical, and emergency care across the remote outback region southwest of Katherine, with a focus on improving the health and wellbeing of all people in the area while providing a strong community voice in matters affecting their health.
KWHB also operates programs across the wider Big Rivers Region, which includes areas served by Wurli Wurlinjang Health Service (Wurli), Sunrise Health Service (Sunrise), and the Northern Territory Government (NT Health).
The Big Rivers Region begins south of Kakadu National Park encompassing Pine Creek, then extends over 500 km south to Kalkaringi and stretches across the width of the Territory between the Western Australia and Queensland borders.
The region is significant in scale, covering over 360,000 km2.
There is a recognised need for service delivery organisations in the region to work in partnership to deliver effective outcomes for clients based on geographical locality and service delivery similarity.
KWHB, Wurli, Sunrise and NT Health have secured funding to work in partnership to deliver the Big Rivers Supporting Recovery from Family, Domestic and Sexual Violence (FDSV) Program.
Program funding is for 2 years.
The Opportunity KWHB are seeking a FDSV Counsellor to join the Big Rivers Supporting Recovery from Family, Domestic and Sexual Violence (FDSV) Program.
This PHN governed, pilot program, will provide client-centred, culturally secure, FDSV-specific trauma-informed care, including mental health care, to FDSV victim-survivors, as part of their longer-term recovery and healing from the impacts of FDSV.
The FDSV Counsellor will provide trauma-informed and culturally sensitive mental healthcare and support to individuals who are healing from the long-term impacts of FDSV.
The position requires a deep understanding of trauma, mental health, social and emotional wellbeing, Indigenous health and the long-term impacts of FDSV.
Reporting to the FDSV Program Manager, the FDSV Counsellor will:
Develop individualised recovery plans, providing ongoing support throughout clients' healing journeys.Implement trauma-informed care, offering evidence-based therapeutic interventions and group facilitation.Educate clients, families, and community groups on trauma, empowering them in their recovery process.Collaborate with local organisations to ensure coordinated care and access to essential services.About You The successful candidate will have demonstrated capabilities in trauma-informed care and experience working with trauma survivors.
Additionally, while experience in DFSV is highly desirable, KWHB values employee development and are open to candidates presenting with transferable experience, and new graduate applicants.
Additionally, the successful candidate will have:
A tertiary degree (or equivalent) qualification from a recognised institution in a relevant field.An understanding of Aboriginal cultural values, and commitment to the advancement and self-determination of Aboriginal communities.Basic computer skills and proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite.Knowledge and understanding of the social determinants of health affecting Aboriginal people living in remote communities.Ability to travel to remote areas for periods of time by 4wd and light aircraft when required.Please note that it is a mandatory requirement for all employees of Katherine West Health Board to hold, or have the ability to obtain, a NT Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card), Criminal History Check, and NT Driver's Licence.
Additionally, as a health organisation, a minimum of three doses of COVID-19 vaccination, along with a valid certificate, is required.
