We're changing the way Australia generates its energy, are you ready for a change? The Project UGL and CPB Contractors have been awarded the early works contract to support Powerlink's delivery of CopperString 2032. This $5 billion iconic project will initially be approximately 840 kilometres of new transmission line running from just south of Townsville to Mount Isa that will connect Queensland's North-West Minerals Province to the national electricity grid.
The project scope includes:
500 kilovolt (kV) transmission line from just south of Townsville to Hughenden330kV transmission line from Hughenden to Cloncurry220kV transmission line from Cloncurry to Mount IsaUp to six new substation sites.The Role The Cost Engineer is responsible for ensuring the Projects and its assets are managed efficiently in terms of resources, costs, profitability, and risk. The Cost Engineer oversees estimates, cost controls, the allocation of budgets, reporting of cost deviations, cash flow reporting, cost forecasting, and change management.
What will a day in this role look like: Develop and maintain detailed Project-related cost analysis and estimates, including materials, labour, equipment, and services, ensuring accuracy and alignment with Project budgets.Provide consultation on planning, coordination, and cost control of Projects.Implement and manage cost control systems to monitor Project expenditures against budgets and forecasts, identifying and addressing overruns in a timely manner.Support the implementation and continuous improvement of cost control strategies in line with team and Project requirements.Maintain project controls systems to ensure data integrity and accurate reporting is provided in a timely manner.Work with various functional areas across the authority (including project managers, procurement, commercial, legal, and finance teams) to ensure best for Project outcomes are achieved.Prepare and present detailed cost reports and forecasts to project managers and stakeholders, highlighting variances between actual and budgeted costs.Analyse Project specifications to identify cost-saving opportunities and recommend cost-effective alternatives.Collaborate with procurement teams to negotiate contracts with suppliers and contractors, ensuring favourable terms and adherence to Project budgets.Assess financial risks associated with Project decisions and propose mitigation strategies to manage potential cost overruns.Participate in contractor bid reviews, assist in contractor variation, and claims evaluations.Develop and implement effective cost tracking and reporting methodologies.What are we looking for you to bring to the team: Bachelor's degree in business, engineering, construction management (or similar), or relevant trade qualification and demonstrated experience.Minimum 8-10 years' experience working in a similar role within the construction, mining, or resource industry.Ability to establish effective working relationships at all levels with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.Strong understanding of cost control processes, capital estimates, and project forecasting.Knowledge and application of cost control principles.Experience in reviewing cost forecasts considering expenditure to date and construction programs.Excellent analytical, organisational, and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.Demonstrated experience in Microsoft Office Suite applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and SharePoint.Proficient in the use of SAP, CMS, or other ERMS is highly regarded.What we offer Great culture that values diversity, innovation, and integrity.Diverse opportunities to grow as a professional.Ongoing training for career progression.Employee benefits, rewards, and wellbeing programme.A competitive remuneration.About us The UGL and CPB Contractors JV for the CopperString 2032 Project brings together the expertise and large project experience of both companies.
