About the opportunity Our NSW SES Southern Zone has a Coordinator Planning vacancy located in the heart of Wagga Wagga. This is an ongoing full-time role with flexible working arrangements such as flexible working hours, and opportunities for working operationally during flood and emergency events across NSW. 
About the role As a member of our Southern Zone planning team, you will lead the management of planning priorities for local towns and regional areas with the key focus to develop plans and policies that reduce the impact of flooding for at-risk communities.
These plans and policies provide our agency and our volunteers with critical intelligence on risks and consequences to support the development of effective response strategies for managing emergencies.
You will achieve this through building and influencing effective intelligence, planning and response capability to meet community expectations and ensuring that floods, storms, and tsunami are effectively addressed across whole-of-government and private sector emergency planning frameworks.
What is great about this role is its variety! Not every day is the same, however some of the typical day to day tasks involve:
Managing and supporting a small team of researchers to analyse available research data related to flood behaviour, identify the vulnerabilities of local communities to the consequences of storms, floods and tsunamis to effectively translate this research into emergency plans, guidelines, policies, and procedures. Ensuring the agencies planning process aligns with the NSW Planning Framework and internal NSW SES governance policies and guidelines. Assess, prioritise, and delegate incoming referrals and risk information amongst the team to capture intelligence and data that would inform effective planning of emergency response. Attending and representing the NSW SES on external forums, meetings, and committees to provide advice and share knowledge on evidence-based information relating to risks and consequences of floods to influence decisions amongst councils, emergency service agencies and other organisations. Work closely with volunteers to capture and leverage local knowledge and expertise and support effective communication and collaboration to meet operational targets. Contribute to maintaining framework and templates to comply with functional and strategic objectives of the cohort team. Contributing to the Branch / Zone Business Planning. Working operationally when the Zone is in operational activity due to flood and storms. This is include being part of Incident Management Teams and providing key planning and intelligence to assist our volunteers in preparing and responding to emergencies.  About you We want to hear from people who are motivated by research/evidence-based information, risk mitigation and influencing external bodies in the risks and consequences of floods, storms and tsunamis. 
We are interested in hearing from candidates with transferable skills and experience from various backgrounds such as:
Environmental, emergency and hazard planning from private or government backgrounds Council Town planners who have skills in town planning strategies to appropriately address and mitigate risks associated with emergency hazards. Skills in identifying risks and consequences through analysis of data and research that informs plans and strategies to address such risks To be successful in this role you will:
Have sound knowledge and understanding of the consequences of natural hazards and subsequent risk management. Have demonstrated experience and awareness of planning systems and the ability to interpret and apply policy in an emergency management context. Have strong communication skills, both written and verbal. Enjoy working with stakeholders and be proficient in building and maintaining these relationships to develop, implement and influence community focussed solutions.
