The Behavioural Escalation Response Team (BERT) Project is a pioneering initiative in Western Australia at Sir Charles Gairdner Osborne Park Healthcare Group (SCGOPHCG) that proactively manages patients with escalating behaviours while addressing work-related violence towards healthcare workers.
The BERT Model of Care focuses on prevention and escalation management, with specialist in-reach consultancy services from Occupational Therapy, Social Work, Psychology, Nursing, and Medical staff.
We have an opportunity for one Fixed Term Full-Time OT, or Part-Time appointments if a suitable job-share can be arranged.
Initial contracts will be approx.
6 months for the pilot phase of this new program, with the possibility of extension(s) and permanency subject to long-term funding.
What is our Coordinator Occupational Therapist (BERT) role? Our Coordinator Occupational Therapist will work within the multidisciplinary BERT team of health professionals and be embedded across SCGOPHCG, supporting healthcare workers with education and mentoring to promote prevention and escalation management, and providing an escalation response to instances of behaviours of concern and/or Acute Severe Behavioural Disturbance (ASBD).
The BERT project is in an exciting pilot stage so the Coordinator OT will be involved in establishing the service and setting up the new model of care.
This will include developing and evaluating the OT component of the program.
You will be supported by the Occupational Therapy leadership team and upskilling will be provided to augment existing experience and skills.
The role of the Occupational Therapist with patients will include:
Comprehensive assessment of underlying causes of behaviour through a thorough evaluation of patient abilities, environment, and routines.Analysis of antecedents/triggers (events leading up to behaviour) and unmet needs and the analysis of the results/consequences of the behaviour.Environmental adaptations to improve safety/sleep/level of stimulation and to orient the patient and decrease confusion.Grading and adapting functional tasks to maximise independence and reduce agitation.Sensory stimulation or reduction strategies to promote calm/minimise agitation.De-escalating strategies including cognitive, communication strategies, and re-direction to meaningful activity.Tailored activities and routines to address emotional/behavioural needs.Education and support to ward staff and carers.Teach family/carers how to create a safe/supportive home or residential care environment.If you have experience in clinical areas where patient behaviours of concern may be more prevalent, including Emergency, AOD, Older Adults, Mental Health, Acquired Brain Injury, Dementia, ASD, and intellectual disability, we would be interested in hearing from you about your transferable skills.
Knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Mental Health Act 2014, Guardianship and Administration Act 1990 would also be beneficial.
