The Role and Hospital We are seeking a motivated and experienced Consultant in Anaesthetics, to provide quality specialist anaesthesia services to the North West Regional Hospital (NWRH) and Mersey Community Hospital (MCH).
Provide specialist anaesthesia services in diagnosis, treatment and care for public and private inpatients and outpatients of the NWRH and to provide specialist anaesthesia at MCH in accordance with Hospital policies. Has prime medico-legal responsibility for anaesthesia provided to allocated patients. Liaise with specialist colleagues as necessary for the provision of these services and provide a consultative service including pain management to other specialist units. Assist in arranging aeromedical referral (NWRH) or onward referral (MCH) of patients for specialist services not available locally. Participate in the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs of the hospital, including both informal and formal tutorials. Teach Junior Medical Staff and Medical Students attached to the specific hospital. Participate in the after hours on call roster. The medical services across the North West region of Tasmania are based primarily at the North West Regional Hospital (NWRH) in Burnie and at the Mersey Community Hospital (MCH) in Latrobe. The population of the area is approximately 116,000 within a total Tasmanian population of around 500,000. The Tasmanian Health Service – North West provides both acute and sub-acute services.
The two hospitals both have busy emergency and general medical departments. Both Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Paediatrics are primarily located at the NWRH with outpatient services at both sites. There are anaesthetic services provided at both sites however primarily based at NWRH. A busy general orthopaedic and general surgical service is based at NWRH with the MCH providing predominately day surgery cases.
Requirements Applicants should be registered (or eligible for registration) as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia and be a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA) or equivalent as an overseas trained specialist who has completed their training in either the UK, Ireland, Canada, USA or New Zealand.
The Medical Board of Australia is establishing a new expedited pathway to specialist registration, eliminating the need for a specialist assessment with a specialist medical college for those with an accepted qualification. The list of accepted qualifications will be published shortly, with the new pathway available from December 2024.
