ASIS is Australia's overseas secret intelligence collection agency.
Its mission is to protect and promote Australia's vital interests through the provision of intelligence services as directed by the Australian Government.
Its work can involve collecting intelligence relating to national security, international relations and economic issues.
It also contributes to Australia's coordinated national efforts against terrorism, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and trans-national issues such as people smuggling.
Role: Data Governance and Compliance Officer (Level 5 and Level 6) This role works under the direction of the Manager of ASIS Data Governance and Compliance to provide advice to specialist teams within ASIS in relation to compliance, legal and privacy obligations regarding data.
The officer will work independently and under the guidance of the manager to: draft high-level policy and guidance documents, contribute to bespoke training, assist in compliance matters, undertake auditing, coordinate input into data management systems as required, and draft Memorandums of Understanding on specialist matters as required.
They will also attend and participate in various working groups and forums as they pertain to data governance and/or compliance, maintaining relationships with key stakeholders from other agencies.
Key Responsibilities and Tasks Outlined below are the key areas of responsibility for the Data Governance and Compliance Officer: Provide compliance advice to specialist teams in relation to data-related matters.
Possess a thorough understanding of the relevant legislation, privacy rules and associated documentation underpinning data matters.
Draft, review and update (when required) compliance policy and guidance documents to address any emerging needs and requirements.
Contribute to bespoke training courses and presentations on compliance and/or governance matters, by way of content development and/or as a presenter if required.
Liaise with key stakeholders from other agencies to ensure any external compliance requirements are being addressed, as well as ensuring consistent and best compliance and governance practice across the intelligence community.
Contribute to the development of MOUs, addressing any associated compliance issues.
Assist with compliance matters as they arise, ensuring stakeholder actions are completed in a timely manner.
Undertake audits of data-related activities and draft reports based on findings.
Core Skills / Education, Qualification and Experience Requirements One or more of the following: Knowledge, or aptitude for, legislative, privacy and compliance issues associated with data use.
Ability to provide compliance advice to specialist teams.
Well-developed oral and written communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills and strong ability to work as a team member under the direction of a Manager.
Ability to represent ASIS across government and internationally, as appropriate.
Ability to exercise judgement & show resilience in compliance & governance issues associated with data matters.
Experience in the following would be beneficial, but not essential: Demonstrated Knowledge of theIntelligence Services Act 2001.
Previous experience in the National Intelligence Community.

The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
