Primary objective: The position will be responsible for the management, scheduling, and oversight of community work projects which require broad knowledge and experience in the construction industry; the position works in a statutory environment providing onsite supervision of primarily Aboriginal offenders incorporating skills development and accountability for work health and safety.
Key duties and responsibilities: Assess proposed construction and maintenance related projects to determine the range of work required and the capacity of community work crews to undertake the project.
Manage community work projects including planning, supervising, and scheduling works, timely purchase and maintenance of equipment, and timely supply of materials.
Supervise, motivate, provide direction, and gain participation of work crews, including those from Aboriginal and culturally diverse backgrounds.
Provide on-site training, workplace induction, and technical instruction for offenders.
Ensure that each offender is allocated a suitable task and performs satisfactorily, monitoring standards of work completed.
Maintain accurate offender time sheets, attendance records, and report on offender performance and behaviour.
Establish and maintain an effective working partnership with a range of government and non-government stakeholders.
Selection criteria: Essential: Building trade qualification or equivalent experience directly related to the position.
Substantial post-trade experience in building construction and/or repairs and maintenance.
Sound knowledge of Australian and NT building codes and standards & relevant legislation.
Experience in the supervision and training of unskilled labour for building and construction projects.
Ability to teach people to use hand and power tools and perform allocated tasks to a satisfactory standard.
A demonstrated understanding of and sensitivity to Aboriginal cultural issues.
Oral and written communication at a high level with a wide audience range.
Experience in the use of computer applications in a business setting.
Current driver's licence for a light rigid vehicle and to tow a trailer.
