Primary Objectives Manage the executive, research, drafting, procedural and administrative support to certain parliamentary committees to enable them to efficiently and effectively fulfil their functions.
Context Statement The Department of the Legislative Assembly provides the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, its Members and Committees with quality and timely support for the operation of the Parliament, Parliamentary Committees, the Parliament House precinct, and Electorate Offices (and staff).
The Committee Office, which is part of the Parliamentary Support Division, supports and promotes the democratic institution of Parliament through the provision of administrative, procedural and logistical support to parliamentary committees.
Key Responsibilities Manage the secretariat support for nominated parliamentary committees and inquiries. Maintain regular liaison with the committee chair on the committee's work. Provide advice and guidance to the committee on its inquiries and procedures. Undertake research and analytical projects to support committees. Prepare reports, discussion papers, briefings and media releases relating to the committee's terms of reference. Develop and implement work programs, including inquiry plans, communication strategies, hearings and meetings throughout the NT for the committee. Selection Criteria Essential Significant demonstrated experience in high-level research, analysis and report writing. Experience in the provision of secretariat support to parliamentary committees or similar bodies. Thorough understanding of public policy and the operation of government. Demonstrated written, oral and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to produce high-quality correspondence and reports. Proven collaboration skills, with demonstrated ability to establish and sustain productive working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders, including with people from diverse cultures. Proven ability to respect and adhere to the requirements of confidentiality, impartiality and integrity. Desirable Demonstrated knowledge or experience of parliamentary processes. Relevant tertiary qualifications. Requirements for Selection and Undertaking the Role Prior to being formally offered a position with the Department of the Legislative Assembly, applicants will be required to submit a pre-employment declaration which includes information regarding their criminal history, conflict of interest and other continuing employment or volunteer work. The successful applicant will be subject to a criminal history check. A criminal history will not exclude an applicant from this position unless it is a relevant criminal history. Access to recreation leave will be restricted during Parliamentary sitting periods. The position is based at Parliament House; however, will require travel throughout the Northern Territory and interstate at times.
