Opportunities exist for talented and enthusiastic Clinical Nurse Specialists – Public Health to work with our Population Health department in the Pilbara. We have a 12-month Fixed Term Full-Time position based in Newman coordinating the Syphilis Outbreak Response, with the possibility of extension(s), and a permanent Full-Time position, based Pilbara wide responsible for the coordination of communicable disease control and the regional immunisation program. The Senior Registered Nurse position coordinates the implementation of communicable disease control programs for the Pilbara. The applicant/s will work collaboratively with Community Nurses, Public Health Nurses, Aboriginal Health Workers, Public Health Physician, Health Promotion Officers and other stakeholders to deliver comprehensive and effective public health services and systems. Promotes evidence-based communicable disease control measures (diagnosis, treatment, management, and communication) with Pilbara Population Health team members, other health professionals, and the communities of the Pilbara. Ensures maintenance of information, surveillance and communication systems in relation to disease control. Takes a lead role in coordination of the regional syphilis outbreak response, and/or regional immunisation program.
In this role, the successful applicant will: Serve as a nurse specialist and expert resource in disease control, overseeing the public health follow-up of notifiable diseases, including detection, management, surveillance, and contact tracing. Plan, implement, and evaluate early intervention strategies, quality improvement initiatives, and evidence-based training and education related to communicable diseases and public health issues. Demonstrate high-level experience in Public Health nursing, with postgraduate qualifications in Public Health, Infectious Disease, or related fields considered highly desirable. An initial 12-month fixed term position is available to a suitably qualified Clinical Nurse Specialist based at Newman Health Services, funded by the WA Syphilis Outbreak Response Program. Working in collaboration with WACHS Pilbara acute and community health services, as well as local Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services, the Syphilis Nurse Coordinator will play a critical role in managing syphilis prevention, testing, treatment, and elimination in alignment with the Pilbara's broader disease control efforts. The role is responsible for ensuring strategic targets are met as part of the WA Syphilis Outbreak Response Action Plan. While based in the Pilbara, the role will work closely with the statewide team and contribute to the delivery of the WACHS Goldfields regional syphilis response. The successful applicant must be willing and able to travel throughout the Pilbara, with intermittent travel to the Goldfields and/or other locations within WA as required.
An additional opportunity exists for an experienced Clinical Nurse Specialist within the Public Health team, leading the coordination of the regional immunisation program and contributing to broader communicable disease control. This role oversees the implementation of the National Immunisation Schedule and provides leadership in the rollout of new vaccines as part of public health responses. The Clinical Nurse Specialist will offer expert advice to staff, external healthcare providers, and the community, while supporting the WA Immunisation Strategy through training, data analysis, and quality improvement initiatives. This regional role is available on a full-time permanent basis, preferably located in South Hedland.
Pilbara overview: The Pilbara is the State's second most northern region and covers 507,896 sq km (including offshore islands). It is the home of 62,841 residents (based on ABS ERP 2020). The Pilbara region is home to some of Earth's oldest rock formations and its landscape includes coastal plains and mountain ranges with cliffs and gorges. It is a globally significant mining and energy region, boasting a wealth of resources, dynamic communities, rich Aboriginal culture and stunning natural landscapes. The region has a rich cultural history and approximately 15 percent of the population comprises of those identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. The Pilbara also has a large transient population, which many people working in the region on a fly-in/ fly-out basis.
