Senior Associate/Special Counsel – International Tax Smart Tax Search is working with a unique and successful law firm based in Brisbane, with a National remit. They are recognised for their ability to solve some of the hardest legal problems that exist in Australia – tax law problems.
Their clients include those in the blockchain and crypto space, SMEs, DAOs, property developers and they work on complex cross-border restructures and transactions, and designing novel tax strategies. Some clients are small; others are listed on the ASX and they do everything in between. They have built their success by helping all these clients solve tax issues (including taking advantage of planning opportunities) and give them general legal advice.

What would you do every day? You will tackle complex tax issues, offering direct solutions, and drafting informed and detailed advice. Collaborate closely with a diverse range of business entities, industries, and technologies. This includes blockchain businesses, fund management businesses, technology businesses and more situated overseas. Engage in brainstorming sessions with senior lawyers to navigate unprecedented tax challenges in areas like cryptocurrency, trust taxation, CGT and international tax. Guide the commercial team on intricate tax restructurings and oversee the execution of these transactions. Liaise with the ATO on matters of tax disputes, litigation, and ruling procedures. This includes class rulings, audits, objections and potential AAT or Federal Court matters. Contribute to the creation of marketing materials, content creation, present at industry conferences and professional groups. Key skills, attributes and qualifications of the successful candidate: Legal qualified. Minimum 5y experience in tax, private sector experience also required; Experience in international corporate tax required, particularly structuring for inbound and outbound to Australia. Experience in international individual tax required, such as residency, cross-border trusts and similar. Experience in financial services tax highly regarded, including AMIT's, Division 855 issues and Investment Manager Regime. Brisbane based, or prepared to relocate to SE QLD (Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast). 2 days in office minimum, can be negotiated. You will have excellent analytical and research skills, be a team player and have a curious mind.
