We want you for our Chief Scientist role!The roleThis position involves providing strategic leadership and expertise in the delivery of public health microbiology services across Queensland. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with service quality standards, regulatory requirements, and workplace safety policies. The role demands advanced knowledge and decision-making to support disease surveillance, outbreak investigations, and biosecurity measures. It also includes managing multidisciplinary teams, resources, and assets to meet current and future service demands while fostering research initiatives that enhance epidemiological data, laboratory outbreak responses, and collaboration with Disease Intelligence networks.Key contributions include establishing and maintaining professional standards, delivering expert training, and actively participating in policy development and professional networks at state, national, and international levels. This role emphasizes driving performance benchmarks, client satisfaction, and quality improvements while supporting professional development and advancing research and clinical practices that address critical public health priorities.The successful personTo excel in this role, you will need to demonstrate leadership qualities alongside extensive knowledge, expertise, and skills in the strategic management of human, financial, and physical resources within a specialized Public Health Microbiology laboratory. Your expertise should include the application of advanced knowledge and skills in contemporary public health microbiological practices, with the ability to operate effectively at both State-wide and National levels.Additionally, you must possess the ability to provide authoritative advice on public health microbiology to a diverse range of stakeholders within and beyond Queensland Health. This includes leading investigations into complex public health microbiology issues, contributing to the development of policies, guidelines, and professional standards, and providing strategic leadership in laboratory operations that align with or exceed NATA standards. The capacity to mentor and train specialist-level scientists in advancing microbiological expertise is also essential.A tertiary qualification (bachelor's degree or higher) with a major in microbiology is a requirement for this role. While not mandatory, postgraduate qualifications or additional education in pathogen genomics, leadership, or management, along with a record of publications in the field of public health microbiology, will be highly regarded.About Queensland Public Health and Scientific Services (QPHaSS)Under the leadership of the Deputy Director General, QPHaSS brings together the medical specialties of pathology and forensic medicine, scientific testing, key system support functions and the surveillance, prevention and control of communicable diseases and public health risks in Queensland.Further information
