The Shire covers an area of 22,000 square kilometres and has a population of approximately 7,000. Dominant industries include cropping, grazing, grain handling, opal mining and tourism.
Found near the junction of the Namoi River and Barwon River, Walgett is a town full of history, tranquillity and adventure. A former paddle-steamer port, it is the northern gateway to the Darling River Run, a fascinating journey that takes in stunning landscapes and rich history.

CHIEF PEOPLE AND CULTURE OFFICERWalgett Shire Council is offering a unique opportunity to take on the newly created role of Chief People and Culture Officer. As a pivotal member of the Executive Leadership Team, you will drive the transformation of the People and Culture function, ensuring alignment with Council's strategic objectives.
This role goes beyond traditional HR—it is about shaping the future of a workforce in a dynamic and evolving environment. You will lead key initiatives in workforce planning, employee engagement, diversity, wellness, and compliance, while fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and inclusion.

The successful applicant will have:Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing strategic HR initiatives aligned with organisational goals.Strong problem-solving abilities and the capacity to manage complex HR challenges effectively.Proven expertise in change management, fostering adaptability and resilience within teams.Comprehensive knowledge of employment legislation and the ability to ensure compliance and best practices.A commitment to diversity, inclusion, and building positive workplace culture.High-level leadership skills, with the ability to mentor, coach, and build capacity within teams.Experience in employee wellness programs, workforce planning, and performance management.Advanced communication and interpersonal skills to engage and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.A track record of delivering innovative HR solutions that enhance organisational performance and employee experience.A degree in Human Resources, Industrial Relations, Business Management, or a related field (or equivalent experience).At Walgett Shire Council, we understand that not every candidate will meet every criterion, and that is perfectly fine—your passion and potential matter most to us.
