Zoos Victoria is a not-for-profit Victorian government statutory authority, operating Melbourne Zoo, Werribee Open Range Zoo, Healesville Sanctuary, and Kyabram Fauna Park with an annual revenue of approximately $150M, 850 staff, 800 volunteers, and over 5,500 animals in their care. Zoos Victoria is committed to ensuring no Victorian terrestrial animals go extinct on their watch.
Financial sustainability is a cornerstone of the 2030 strategy, and driving innovation, growth, and commercial activities is central to ensuring financial success. Zoos Victoria has one of the largest membership bases in Australia with more than 350,000 current members and is the largest paid visitor attraction in the State, welcoming nearly 3 million visitors in 2023/24. The $90m Werribee Open Range Zoo redevelopment will see significant evolution of both Melbourne and Werribee zoos as the elephants relocate to Werribee.
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, you will be an integral member of the executive leadership team, responsible for leading, managing, and reporting financial performance, and providing strategic and operational advice to the Executive and Board. The role encompasses developing and implementing comprehensive financial strategies, including diversifying and growing revenue, enhancing reporting mechanisms and control systems to safeguard organisational assets, and ensuring accurate financial reporting.
You will have a key role in supporting and assessing the commercial activities across the organisation, including visitation, membership, retail, catering, and philanthropy. You will also be responsible for overseeing procurement and purchasing activities in compliance with Victorian Government requirements, as well as implementing and managing all aspects of the Asset Management Accountability Framework (AMAF).
Additionally, the role requires fostering and maintaining strong working relationships with key government bodies such as the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), Department of Treasury and Finance (DTF), and other relevant government entities that support the organisation, ensuring effective collaboration and alignment with governmental standards and expectations.
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record as a CFO or Finance Director in either public or private sectors, demonstrating your ability to implement commercially focused financial solutions within complex business environments. Your leadership style should be one of a trusted advisor able to drive financial and commercial outcomes, with a strong capacity to motivate teams towards a shared vision and financial accountability. You will also need to demonstrate effective collaboration on complex projects, strong communication skills for stakeholder management, and a commitment to ESG principles. Extensive experience in managing financial reporting and projections, treasury functions, taxation, compliance reporting, and asset management is essential. The preferred candidate will hold a degree in Finance or Accounting, along with CPA or CA, and knowledge of business management systems such as Microsoft Business Central.
