This is a rare opportunity to make a profound impact on the Australian medical research landscape while fostering a culture of excellence, support, and innovation.As the CEO, you'll play a pivotal role in maximising revenue streams, establishing partnerships, and guiding high-quality service delivery, ensuring the organisation remains at the forefront of advancing health and medical research, advocating for sector sustainability, and supporting the professional growth of researchers.About ASMR:The Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR) is the peak professional society representing Australian health and medical researchers, with a legacy of over 60 years in advocacy, leadership, and community engagement.
Dedicated to supporting early- and mid-career researchers, ASMR fosters professional growth, builds sustainability for the sector, and strengthens public impact through its strategic initiatives.
ASMR represents over 20,000 researchers through its direct members and affiliated societies.The role:As the inaugural Chief Executive Officer, you will report to the Board of Directors and drive the strategic and operational success of the organisation.
This role combines vision-setting, advocacy, commercial leadership, and team management.
With ASMR at a transformational moment, your leadership will enhance the organisation's impact, membership, and sustainability.Key Responsibilities:Strategic Leadership:Deliver on the ASMR Strategic Plan (2024–28), with a focus on doubling membership and expanding member benefits.Develop a 3–5 year operational plan to grow revenue, build leadership development programs, and secure long-term sustainability.Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and innovative culture aligned with ASMR's values.Advocacy and Engagement:Represent ASMR in interactions with government, policymakers, and stakeholders to drive advocacy for the sector.Build relationships with researchers, scientific leaders, academic institutions, and industry partners.Expand ASMR's visibility and influence nationally and globally.Financial Sustainability and Business Development:Diversify revenue streams through partnerships, sponsorships, and innovative initiatives.Oversee budget management and ensure financial performance meets strategic goals.Present compelling business cases to the Board for new opportunities.Event and Program Excellence:Oversee ASMR's flagship events, including the National Scientific Conference, ensuring value and engagement for members.Design new initiatives to support professional development and networking opportunities.To succeed in this role, you will have:Tertiary qualification in business, science, or a related field.Demonstrated ability to lead strategic and operational planning with measurable outcomes.Experience in advocacy, event management, and stakeholder engagement.Proven experience leading not-for-profit or member-based organisations, ideally within the medical research sector.A track record of driving membership growth, securing partnerships, and achieving financial sustainability.Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders, including government, industry, and academia.In return, you will benefit from:Purpose-driven work: Lead Australia's peak body for medical research in its mission to support researchers and enhance the sector.Professional growth: Shape a national organisation during a pivotal phase of transformation.Collaborative culture: Work with a passionate and supportive Board of Directors.Impactful leadership: Drive advocacy, sustainability, and innovation in health and medical research.Remote / Work from Home: This role offers incredible flexibility, with most of your time working from home and occasional national travel.If this is an opportunity that interests you and you believe you have the right background and passion for it, please apply today and we will be in touch shortly.
