The opportunity The Chief Executive Officer reports to the Secretary of the Department of Industry, Science and Resources and is the Accountable Authority for Geoscience Australia, a non-corporate Commonwealth entity. Geoscience Australia is primarily located in Symonston in the Australian Capital Territory with other locations in regional areas.
As leader and manager of a 700-person organisation you will be responsible for an organisation spanning scientific advances in discovery of critical minerals, groundwater and other resources; positioning and navigation; Earth observation and geospatial technology; national location information; natural hazards; and marine and coastal research.
Your leadership and vision will drive the significant influence of Geoscience Australia to oversee the evolution of the operating environment and broaden Geoscience Australia's capability to capture, analyse and model data to deepen the understanding of geology and geography of Australia.
You will be responsible for securing and maintaining the organisation's resource base, developing and leading the implementation of the organisation's strategic plan and overseeing the development and delivery of the annual work program. This includes the provision of quality geoscientific advice and supporting the priorities of the Australian Government.
The organisation is progressing a transformation agenda to improve its performance, resilience and impact. A transformation program has been established to drive operating model changes to enhance alignment with long-term government, science and corporate priorities, and uplift the management systems of the organisation. This includes building capability, streamlining governance, improving systems and creating up-skilling and cross-skilling opportunities across all programs and activities. The Chief Executive Officer leads this transformation agenda and is responsible for ensuring the vision of a stronger, healthier, and safer organisation is achieved.
Our ideal candidate To be successful in the role you will have experience or demonstrated ability to lead a major science organisation, be a passionate and effective communicator and be able to provide advice to state, territory, and the Australian Government.
You will possess high level executive and management skills and be able to lead, manage and support the wide range of activities undertaken by Geoscience Australia in support of the priorities of the Australian Government.
The position demands considerable interactions with a diverse range of stakeholders including numerous Australian Government departments, geoscientific and related agencies, Universities, the private sector and international partners.
This is a high-profile position so the ability to present well and handle public relations is also essential. You will also need to meet administrative and corporate responsibilities under the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013, Public Service Act 1999, Work Health and Safety Act 2011, and other legislation.

Eligibility A post-graduate qualification and experience within a Geoscience and/or technical discipline is desirable as are tertiary qualifications in public administration, commerce, business management, or equivalent relevant career experience suited to the role.

The position requires a Negative Vetting 2 security clearance and the successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
