Primary objective: The Chief Environmental Scientist is responsible for ensuring that infrastructure projects and initiatives are developed and implemented in an environmentally sustainable manner.
The role is pivotal in assessing and mitigating the environmental impacts of infrastructure development while promoting the conservation and protection of natural resources.
Context statement: Infrastructure NT, the Northern Territory's infrastructure body, undertakes strategic infrastructure planning and development that coordinates and aligns infrastructure needs with economic and population growth, and delivers nationally significant infrastructure projects.
Key duties and responsibilities: Accountable to the Infrastructure Commissioner of the NT, provide expert environmental advice to progress the major infrastructure projects, ensuring they are developed and implemented in an environmentally sustainable manner.
Conduct thorough assessments of the potential environmental impacts of proposed projects and initiatives, evaluating the effects on ecosystems, biodiversity, air and water quality, and other environmental factors.
Engage in effective communication and collaboration with various stakeholders, including government agencies, community groups, indigenous communities, and industry experts.
Provide leadership and utilise contemporary management skills to support staff in building effective team and inter-agency relationships.
Prepare high-level documentation including Ministerial Briefings, funding proposals, decision notes, and presentations to key stakeholders.
Lead a professional team to solve complex challenges and deliver innovative project development across a range of complex projects.
Selection criteria: Essential: Tertiary qualification in Environmental Science from a recognised institution or equivalent discipline.
Demonstrated expert-level experience in environmental science principles, including knowledge of ecosystems, biodiversity, climate change, pollution, and environmental impact assessment.
Ability to provide high-level strategic and environmental advice to the Infrastructure Commissioner and executive management.
Well-developed executive leadership capability with the ability to articulate a vision and translate directions into effective actions.
High-level oral and written communication skills to support relationship management with stakeholders.
High-level strategic and project planning skills and demonstrated abilities in innovative planning and project delivery solutions.
Sound understanding of the political, economic, social, and cultural issues impacting land development in the Territory.
Desirable: Previous experience in environmental management of proposed land and marine developments in Darwin Harbour.
Knowledge of NT environmental legislation and policies.
