We are looking for a Senior Instrument Chemist, who will be hands-on in the laboratory to lead and train our senior scientific officers in the instrument team.
The applicant must be an instrument specialist, with extensive experience with instruments such as LCMS-MS (Liquid chromatography mass spectrometry), ICP-OES (Induction Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy), ICP-MS (Induction Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer), FIA (Flow Injection Analyser), Continuous Segmented Flow Analyser, Robotic Auto-Titrator, a Robotic BOD analyser and GC-MS (Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry) instruments.
The applicant must have experience to complete the commissioning of our PFAS facility and to gain NATA accreditation using a LCMS-MS (Shimadzu LCMS-8060NX) for water, wastewater and biosolids. This NATA accreditation process has commenced.
The applicant will be expected to provide an opportunity to grow our Organic and Inorganic Chemistry capabilities for the City, assist in the implementation and validation of new instruments, provide ongoing training and competency assessment of staff, and participation in the routine analyses of samples and reporting of results.
Your responsibilities in this role will require you to:
• Manage, supervise and co-ordinate the Instrument Chemistry Section of the laboratory
• Train staff on higher level instruments, including LCMS-MS, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, FIA and GC-MS
• Be responsible for the timely analysis and reporting of results to meet customer demands and designated reporting turn-around-times
• Issue NATA endorsed laboratory reports using the LIMS database
• Undertake significant projects and/or functions involving the use of advanced analytical skills
• Provide expert advice and negotiate on matters of complexity within the work area, and for the City's internal and external customers, and members of the public
• Control and coordinate the work area within budgetary constraints, including the purchase and receipt of supplies using SAP
• Participation in and performance of, internal quality audits, including technical audits and safety audits
• Contribute to the development and validation of new procedures and methodology
We're looking for people who have: • Experience in PFAS analyses of water, waste and biosolids samples
• Extensive experience using high-level laboratory instruments
• Extensive knowledge and experience from working in a commercial NATA accredited Chemical laboratory servicing water and wastewater customers
• Experience in supervising, managing and training staff
• Advanced scientific knowledge of Chemistry gained through experience, training or education
• Appreciation of the long-term goals of the organisation and Council's Values
• Detailed knowledge of program activities and work practices relevant to the work area and the legislative requirements relative to the water industry
• A comprehensive knowledge of statutory requirements relevant to water and wastewater analysis
• Extensive knowledge of NATA requirement
