The Business:
Our client is a Canadian Pension Fund and the largest investor in Australian agriculture. They have built an unprecedented portfolio of investments and partnerships in real assets (mainly land, water and biological assets), as well as in the related post farm gate supply chain. They have 8 distinct portfolios that cover the major agricultural asset classes and types of enterprise, making it one of the most significant players in the natural resources sector in the region.
The largest of these portfolios, Fresh Country Farms, focuses on horticultural assets and related value chains, it includes close to $3B AUM sitting within this specific investment vehicle alone. Their investments and operations span some of the finest growing regions across Australia and to a lesser extent, Europe. They have a strong mandate for continued expansion and will continue to prioritise direct, long-term investments alongside like-minded, best-in-class local operating partners.
The Position:
We are seeking an experienced and commercially astute Chief Financial Officer (CFO). This is a unique opportunity for a finance leader to take charge of the financial operations across the Australian and European funds. The role goes beyond traditional CFO responsibilities, providing strategic support to the CEO and playing a pivotal role in the overall business strategy and growth of the portfolio.
The Role:
Reporting directly to the CEO, the CFO will lead a highly skilled finance team and have full responsibility for financial management, reporting, business partnering and treasury functions. Key responsibilities also include:
Providing high-level financial analysis and decision support, including scenario modelling for investment activities. Managing financial controls, compliance, and reporting in line with Australian accounting standards and regulatory requirements. Overseeing treasury operations, cash flow management, and securing external funding for M&A activities. Leading and mentoring the finance team, driving continuous improvement and operational excellence. Contributing to strategic decision-making with the CEO, board, and key stakeholders, ensuring alignment with the company's objectives. Working closely with European service providers to manage cross-jurisdictional funds. The Requirements:
At least 10 years of senior financial management experience, ideally within funds management. Strong commercial skills, with experience in M&A, financial analysis, and stakeholder engagement. A proactive, hands-on approach with the ability to work collaboratively with external advisors in tax, legal, and finance. A track record of leading finance teams and managing complex financial operations across multiple entities.
