Job Description
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will lead the strategic direction and operations of Cannabis Council Australia, with a focus on building advocacy, driving member engagement, and positioning the association as a leading authority in the industry. The CEO will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to shape and execute initiatives that elevate the association's profile, strengthen member value, and foster partnerships with key government, industry, and community leaders.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership:
Develop and execute the association's long-term strategic plan, ensuring alignment with industry needs and trends.
Drive initiatives that enhance the association's visibility and influence within the industry, government, and broader public.
Build and lead a high-performing team by providing clear leadership, direction and support to employees, ensuring they have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities.
Set clear and ambitious team OKRs and KPIs in relation to key success drivers, and take swift and decisive action in case of underperformance.
Public Affairs and Advocacy:
Lead the association's advocacy efforts, representing the interests of members to government bodies, regulators, and other key stakeholders.
Build and maintain strong relationships with policymakers, regulators, and influencers to shape policies and legislation that benefit the industry.
Collaborate with the Board and relevant committees to develop and promote policy positions, white papers, and thought leadership initiatives.
Monitor industry trends, challenges, and opportunities, ensuring the association is proactive in addressing issues that impact the industry and members.
Oversee the organisation of events, workshops, and conferences that address industry needs and enhance the association's reputation and reach.
Stakeholder Engagement and Collaboration:
Foster partnerships and collaborations with other industry bodies, research institutions, and international organisations to promote knowledge sharing and best practices.
Serve as the primary spokesperson for the association, representing the organisation at public forums, media engagements, industry conferences, and networking events.
Develop strong relationships with industry leaders, CEOs, and other key stakeholders to build a robust network of supporters.
Membership Engagement and Growth:
Increase member engagement by delivering value-driven programs, services, and opportunities for networking, education, and business growth.
Drive membership growth by identifying and engaging prospective members, including new businesses, startups, and key industry players.
Operational Excellence:
Oversee the day-to-day operations of the association, ensuring effective management of financial resources, personnel, and member services.
Collaborate with the Board of Directors to ensure strong governance and transparency in decision-making and operations.
Drive the development and implementation of processes that optimise the efficiency and effectiveness of the association's operations.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Business, Public Administration, Non-Profit Management, or a related field. A Master's degree is preferred.
Proven track record as a CEO, Executive Director, or senior leader in the not-for-profit sector, preferably within an industry advocacy or trade association.
Extensive experience in public policy, government relations, or advocacy, with a strong understanding of regulatory processes.
Strong public speaking, media relations, and written communication skills, with experience as a spokesperson or advocate in high-profile settings.
Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic plans, navigate complex industry challenges, and lead change in a dynamic environment.
Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence diverse stakeholders, including government officials, industry leaders, and donors.
Strong financial management skills, including budgeting, financial reporting, and revenue generation through fundraising or membership models.
Passion for the organisation's cause, with a commitment to driving positive impact and industry change.
