This is an excellent career opportunity to join the site leadership of a unique coal mining operation in regional Tasmania. The Cornwall Coal Company operates underground and open cut coal mines and a coal washing and processing plant in Northeastern Tasmania (Fingal). Fingal is ~1.5 hours from Launceston and ~20-35 minutes from the beautiful coastal towns of St. Marys and Scamander.
Cornwall Coal produces approximately 400,000 tonnes of coal each year, supplying the Cement Australia Railton operation and the majority of Tasmania's general coal requirements. Employing over 70 people, Cornwall Coal represents one of the major industries in the region and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Cement Australia (CA).
This is a Monday to Friday, three shift operation focused on providing reliable, consistent quality coal to meet customer needs rather than the more typical high-volume focus of traditional coal mining operations. As a strategic asset of Cement Australia, the success of Cornwall Coal is critical, and you will have the opportunity to drive change where needed and be supported in achieving the underground mine's operational goals.
About the role: Through your personal leadership, you will reinforce the expectations of working safely, ensuring safe and sustainable work systems are in place. You will lead, develop and recruit people resources to ensure maximum productivity, identifying areas of improvement for your direct reports and their teams and, importantly, organize cost-effective training, coaching, and communications to meet the identified need.

Some of your responsibilities will include: Provide visible SHE leadership and maintain a safe system of work for all employees and contractors Lead, recruit and develop the people in the team to ensure maximum employee productivity Organize cost-effective training, coaching, and communications to meet the identified need Conduct annual performance review of staff reports as required Continually promote the benefits of workforce flexibility by challenging demarcation and poor behavior Deliver a consistent volume and quality of Raw Coal to the washery in line with the budget and geological limitations of the deposit Design and implement an asset management strategy for the Underground operations that reflects the long-term return in the business case and delivers the required asset performance Implement and maintain site environmental management plans and liaise with the Environmental Manager to ensure the appropriate level of compliance Lead the development of operational and capital budgets for underground operations that deliver returns on investment at least equal to the business case About you: Minimum of 5 years bord and pillar coal mining experience, including practical experience operating equipment and supervision of teams Previous experience holding a statutory role of Deputy and Undermanager Bachelor of Mining Engineering or equivalent (desirable) First Class Coal Mine Manager's Certificate officially recognized in Australia (required) Ventilation Officer certificate (required) Demonstrable knowledge and application of mine planning including practical implementation Experience in workforce planning, EBA negotiations, and performance management of staff Knowledge of relevant industry standards and legislation Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Autocad Strong leadership skills High level of Production Scheduling, Budgeting, and Business financial skills High level of asset maintenance understanding Why work for Cement Australia?
